Hraničná combines a chapel, Stations of the Cross and a memorial with seasonal activities at U Vodárny. When choosing the focus of your trip, it is worth noting the differences: one offers historical buildings and traces of remembrance, while the other features ski lessons, ski slopes and snow tubing. Trniště offers a different highlight: a granite rock with an observation platform.

Chapel, Stations of the Cross and memorial

The chapel in Hraničná features a striking combination of materials and details: its walls are made of granite, and the barrel vault is built of brick. The roof is covered with wooden shingles; two small windows have decorative grilles. These features give the chapel its own architectural character. In 2013, it was reconstructed by the Spolek přátel obce Janov nad Nisou.

The construction and later restoration of the Stations of the Cross took place at different times: they were built in 1878 on land belonging to Josef Klamt and restored and consecrated in 1903. A 2020 route description says that the Stations of the Cross can only be reached on foot via marked hiking trails. It lists the yellow trail from Janov nad Nisou, the green trail from Vysoký hřeben, and the blue trail from Bedřichov or, from the other side, from the valley of the Bílá (Rýnovická) Nisa in Hraničná. Check the route locally before setting out.

The memorial to the victims of the First World War was erected in 1930 by Josef Stumpe in honour and memory of the sons who fell in the war. Several works followed: the Spolek přátel obce Janov nad Nisou reconstructed the memorial in 2004; in 2025, its inscriptions, including the names of the fallen, were renewed. These dates mark different chapters in the memorial’s history—its erection, reconstruction and the renewal of its inscriptions.

Winter activities at U Vodárny

The “U Vodárny” ski area at Hraničná 1348 has three ski slopes. Individual and group ski and snowboard lessons are offered for children and adults; lesson availability may vary by season. The activities also include snow tubing on inflatable tyres, described as an experience for the whole family. This activity is seasonal too. If you are planning a visit, you can check the current dates and availability of the activities in advance.

There is a special access condition for lessons and skiing: if access to Bedřichov is closed, “U Vodárny” can be reached via Vyšehradská and Hraničná streets, as far as the upper lift station. As this information applies when a closure is in effect and local traffic restrictions may change, check access information before travelling.

Trniště granite rock

Trniště is a 15-metre-high granite rock with steps carved into the stone. At the top is an observation platform with a railing. The view is now partly obscured by mature trees—a useful distinction for anyone who expects an unobstructed panorama from a viewpoint. The rock steps and platform also make Trniště a distinctive landscape attraction alongside the chapel, Stations of the Cross and memorial, as well as the seasonal winter activities.
