Discover Podgorje through a range of interests: walking among vineyards, cycling around the ponds, and exploring church history and regional culture. When planning a stay, it helps to decide which aspect matters most. The circular walking trail has specified time and elevation details; other activities focus on views, nature or special events.

Walking among vineyards and taking in the views

Before 1880, Podgorje developed as Kozja Glava in the southwestern part of the Virovitica wine-growing area. Today, the “Virovitički vidici” circular walking trail passes through the Podgorje area. It is 10 kilometres long; the walking time is about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and the elevation difference is 93 metres. In the Podgorje section, vineyards alternate with weekend houses, meadows and wooded areas. From here, there are views of Virovitica and Hungary.

The “Virovitički vidici” wine road, which extends as far as Podgorje, offers a different perspective. There, paths branch off from the main road to the vineyards on the hillside. The vineyard paths offer sweeping views of Virovitica, the Drava and Hungary. This gives you two different perspectives: the circular walking trail, with its specified time and elevation details, and the vineyard paths, with their landscape and scenic viewpoints. Before setting out, check the condition of the paths and access details; viewpoints and access points may change over time.

Cycling, ponds and nature

In the vicinity of Podgorje, the nine Virovitica ponds offer opportunities for recreational fishing all year round. The “Put Šarana” cycling trail runs alongside the ponds and is more than 10 kilometres long. It is described as a unique single-track cycling route. Cycling therefore adds a distinct focus alongside fishing.

Those interested in local flora and fauna will also find the “Virovitička Bilogora” educational trail nearby. It is 4 kilometres long, takes about 90 minutes and has 11 information panels. The walk is estimated to take less time than the circular walking trail, at around 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Church history and regional culture

A specific historical landmark in Podgorje is the Chapel of Saint Nicholas Tavelić, which opened on 24 September 1965. The former name Kozja Glava adds another perspective on the settlement’s history before 1880.

Beyond the immediate area, the Virovitica-Podravina County “Spiritual Experience Route” passes through town centres and picturesque villages. This multi-day cultural route includes around a dozen churches. Its themes range from architecture, ethnography and history to nature, recreation and pilgrimage. It therefore offers a broader regional cultural focus than the history of the chapel in Podgorje.

Events and dates

Advent in Podgorje was held for the third time in 2025; that year’s event took place on 7 December. Visitors came from Podgorje, Golo Brdo, Sveti Đurađ, Virovitica and other places in the Virovitica area. At this edition, langošice, fritule, homemade sausages in bread rolls, hot chocolate, mulled wine and tea were offered. The selection may vary from year to year.

The Kestenijada “Sve nam se opet s jeseni vrati” was also held in Podgorje in 2025, for the second time, on 25 October. If you are travelling to attend an event, check the exact dates for the relevant year in advance.
