Suhopolje reveals itself through various facets of its history and everyday life: Late Baroque architecture, a protected park, churches with distinctive details, and festivals that bring different highlights throughout the year. Those interested in culture, nature or local cuisine will find more than just one main attraction here.
Castle and park
The Dvorac Janković complex was built in 1775 as a large Late Baroque estate. The surrounding park covers 7.99 hectares and is protected as a garden architecture monument. In this way, the history of the estate is connected with the park’s distinct architectural significance.
The park is very easy to reach from the D2 main road. Tourist signs, information boards and municipal amenities help visitors find their way around. For visitors who would first like to focus on one place, the park can be treated as a destination in its own right, without losing sight of Suhopolje’s other cultural attractions.
Church art and architectural history
The Crkva sv. Terezije Avilske in Suhopolje has been protected as a cultural monument since 1969 and is considered an example of Neoclassical architecture. Its distinctive features include six wooden candleholders in a Neoclassical style, which are considered rare in Croatia. The crypt contains the sarcophagi of its builder, Ivan Nepomuk Jankovich, his wife Terezija, and their son. Architecture, furnishings and family history come together here in different forms.
Architectural history in Cabuna can also be traced through specific dates: The Crkva Kraljice sv. Krunice was built in 1906, consecrated in June 1907 and originally dedicated to Saint Clotilde. The Dvorac Janković castle in Cabuna is protected as a cultural asset, but is in very poor, dilapidated condition. As its condition may change, it is advisable to check the latest situation before visiting.
Festivals and activities throughout the year
Every June, the Grofov cvjetni bal flower parade makes its way through Suhopolje, ending in Suhopolje Park with music, singing and dancing. BUB – Biciklom u Bukovu takes place every September: This recreational cycling tour runs from Suhopolje towards Bukova and is open to all age groups. As route details may change, check the information for the date in question.
Dani oraha also takes place in September, a food festival featuring stalls with traditional walnut specialties, music and a contest for the best-decorated stall. The two September events offer different highlights: BUB is all about the cycling tour, while Dani oraha focuses on regional specialties and festival activities. Suhopoljski kotlić, meanwhile, is all about venison stew: Amateur cooks take part in a traditional cooking competition, and visitors can try their hand at the competition or taste the finished dish.
Wine and local production
DIBA includes a restaurant and the old cellar of Count Janković. Pinot Blanc is named as its best-known wine. DIBA also offers wine tastings, wine training sessions and wine workshops. If these offerings are important for your plans, check their current availability in advance.
Local production also showcases different aspects of the area’s food culture. Dedin mlin in Cabuna produces flour using traditional stone-grinding methods. Obrt Agro Batat in Suhopolje produces sweet potatoes, kiwano, elderberries and paulownia trees. OPG Apis in Cabuna produces and packages honey, cakes and sweeteners for the food service industry; Predrag Momčilović in Suhopolje produces honey and queen bees. Together, these examples represent different products and production methods within the municipality.
Nature observations with a time reference
A 2018 monitoring survey recorded the large copper butterfly in wet meadows near Pepelane. The species is considered potentially endangered in Croatia, but is listed as Least Concern in the European IUCN Red List. A report published on 27 December 2018 gave the size of a European bee-eater colony west of Cabuna, on the slopes of Bilogora, as 180 to 200 breeding pairs. The date makes clear that this figure refers to a description of the colony at that time.
