When planning a trip to Pitomača, it is worth distinguishing the town from the wider destination of Općina Pitomača. The Church of St. Vid and the Kos workshop represent cultural attractions in Pitomača; Drava landscapes and other nature and cultural offerings round out the wider destination. This lets you shape your stay around your interests in music, literature, birdlife or river landscapes.

Drava landscapes in the wider destination of Općina Pitomača

Since 2008, the Mura–Drava Regional Park has included the protected landscapes of Križnica, Jelkuš and Širinski otok, as well as the Vir wetland, within the area of the wider destination of Općina Pitomača. These named areas show different facets of the river landscape: Križnica is a river island and one of the Drava’s most pronounced meanders. Its easily recognisable flower shape with five petals is regarded as a symbol of this stretch of the river. Križnica is also a protected landscape designated for its exceptional aesthetic and biological value.

Jelkuš is bounded by the Croatian-Hungarian border and the Drava; an isolated sand ridge there provides a habitat for birds. At Širinski otok, by contrast, an arm of the river and the Drava’s main channel define the boundaries of the isolated natural landscape. Many bird species live there too. When water levels are low, the riverbed of the old Drava channel becomes a natural crossing for animals. In Križnica, the old course of the Drava and standing waters provide habitats for many fish species. Comparing these landscapes reveals different habitats: a sand ridge and bird habitat at Jelkuš, a river island and meander at Križnica, and an animal crossing in the old riverbed at Širinski otok.

Getting to Križnica also requires some planning. Its only land connection with the rest of Croatia is a suspension bridge about two metres wide, with a steel structure and a wooden walking surface. A cable ferry also crosses the Drava; it cannot operate when water levels are either low or high. If you are planning a specific trip, check the ferry service in advance.

Nature experiences and routes

With Drava Tour Adventure, you can look for herds of deer and protected sand martins along the Drava; as with all wildlife sightings, these are naturally variable. At the Jelkuš sandbank, you can make a short stop to sunbathe on the wild beach. This offers two distinct ways to enjoy the area: observing nature and spending time by the river, though individual sightings cannot be planned.

EuroVelo 13, the Iron Curtain Trail, is also one of the cycling routes in the destination of Pitomača. It is a distinct route within the wider destination of Općina Pitomača. When planning, you can treat this cycling trail as separate from the protected river landscapes and opportunities for wildlife observation.

Literature, music and local culture

In the wider destination of Općina Pitomača, Grabrovnica is home to Kuća Petra Preradovića. The house was built in 1775; in 1968, one of the first museums dedicated to a writer was established there. The multimedia exhibition “Virtualna Stvarnost” includes a walk-through 3D reconstruction of the poet’s birthplace. Other interactive features invite visitors to complete a poem, put verses together as a group and answer quiz questions. In the basement area, “Susreti”, visitors meet Petar Preradović in holographic form.

Visits must be booked in advance: the Interpretacijski centar Kuća Petra Preradovića can be visited Monday to Friday by prior reservation. Visits outside regular opening hours are possible with at least 48 hours’ notice. If the literature centre is important to your trip, plan your visit accordingly.

The region’s musical history can be understood through two distinct dates. The first tambura ensemble was founded in the wider destination of Općina Pitomača in 1906. In Pitomača itself, the Kos workshop has been regarded as the birthplace of tamburica instrument making since the mid-20th century. The Festival pjesme Podravine i Podravlja promotes new songs inspired by the culture and heritage of Croatian landscapes along the Drava.

A seasonal culinary event is Dani pečenjakov, a summer event in Pitomača. Pečenjak—roasted corn—is prepared in various ways and offered to visitors in late July or early August. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the specific event dates.

Klopotec and views

In the wider destination of Općina Pitomača, TIC Klopotec is located on Kladarski breg. It houses Croatia’s largest klopotec, a traditional symbol of viticulture in Podravina. Visitors can learn about local cultural heritage, take part in workshops and events, and enjoy panoramic views of the Podravina plains, the slopes of Bilogora and the distant horizons of neighbouring Hungary. This cultural visit adds a distinctive viewpoint to the destination’s nature and literature themes.
