Church history, religious routes and bodies of water form three clearly distinct themes for planning a trip to the Municipality of Gradina. Gradina lies in the Drava lowlands south of the Drava River. The Mura-Drava Regional Park also extends across the municipal area. It lies directly along the Bušetina–Lukač–Gradina–Suhopolje–Čađavica county road. The church in Gradina is a notable focal point; the named lakes and ponds are also located in other settlements.

Watercourses and ponds

The Drava runs for 18.90 kilometres through the municipal area; the Županijski Canal runs for 14.30 kilometres. Alongside these watercourses, the lakes and ponds offer specific points of comparison. The pond near Budakovac covers 59.25 hectares; swans have been staying there for many years. Lake Neteča in Detkovac covers 34.51 hectares, making it almost twice the size of Lake Liman in the same place, which covers 18.50 hectares. At 9.27 hectares, the pond near Novi Gradac is smaller than the other lakes and ponds mentioned.

Neteča has a designated fishing trail and a fishing lodge. Check the current conditions for these facilities before visiting. The two places offer different highlights: Neteča has a fishing trail and a fishing lodge, while Budakovac is known for the swans that have been staying there for many years.

Church and local history

The church of “sv. Ilije Proroka” in Gradina has several clearly dated stages of construction and decoration. Parish priest Josip Nesek laid its foundations in 1775; the rectory in Gradina was built in 1783. The church was painted in 1904 and 1905, and its interior was repainted in 2004 and 2005. A protected chestnut avenue, planted in 1883, surrounds the church. A view of the church, rectory and avenue brings together different elements of local architectural and landscape history.

Stations of the Cross and religious tradition

A Way of the Cross with stations connects the apparition site of Gospa Gradinska with the church of “sv. Ilije Proroka”. At the apparition site there is a cross and a place of prayer with a shaded shelter. People pray and recite the Rosary there, sing Marian hymns, light candles and lay flowers. In this way, the path, church and place of prayer form a connected religious point of reference, adding a spiritual perspective to the architectural history.

A dated example of the Fišijada

Another cultural tradition is the Gradinska fišijada. The announcement dated 14 May 2026 was for the fourth edition, on 16 May 2026, at the “Sokol” hunting lodge in Gradina. It described a competition to prepare Fiš stew, as well as the chance to taste fried fish and Fiš; according to the announcement, the event is held every year. The announced edition has passed. If you would like to plan a future trip around a new edition, check its dates.
