On the east coast of the island of Ugljan, Sutomišćica lies in a sheltered bay. Two coastal spots are distinctly different: Plaža Sutomišćica is in the heart of the village, while Sutomiška vala is at Cape Sveti Grgur, at the very end of the village. Alongside these beach spots, Lantana Manor House is a prominent historic landmark. These specific coastal and cultural features offer a way to get to know Sutomišćica.
Coast: pebble beach in the village, concrete beach at the cape
Plaža Sutomišćica is a pebble beach with a gently sloping entrance into the sea. It has sun loungers, a shower and a changing cabin; natural shade is also available. Sutomiška vala, by contrast, is a concrete beach at Cape Sveti Grgur, at the very end of Sutomišćica. Access to the sea is well developed. The far end of the cape is rocky and surrounded by cypress trees.
The two coastal spots therefore differ both in location and in surface. The information about the gently sloping entrance applies to Plaža Sutomišćica, while the well-developed sea access applies to Sutomiška vala. Facilities and beach conditions may change; check the current situation before your visit.
Lantana Manor House and Venetian architectural history
Lantana Manor House dates back to the 17th century and includes an extensive park and a chapel. It displays all the features of Venetian Baroque architecture. Until the fall of Venice in 1797, the ceremonial handover of the Venetian doge’s office for Dalmatia and Albania took place here. The manor house is thus both an architectural focal point and the setting for a specific historical function.
Churches and historical milestones
The churches also bring together different historical milestones. The parish church of Saint Euphemia is mentioned in 1349; a new church is recorded in 1679. Medallions kept in the parish church are a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia. The Church of Sveti Grgur in Sutomišćica is first mentioned on 10 January 1398. The Chapel of Sveti Grgur at Cape Sveti Grgur was restored in the 15th century.
Vela Glava and views of Zadar
The remains of a monastic complex and the Sveti Mihovil fortress are located on Mount Vela Glava. From there, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city of Zadar and the Zadar Archipelago. This viewpoint adds a distinct landscape dimension to the area’s architectural and ecclesiastical history.
Preko as a distinct regional focus
In the wider destination of Preko, the remains of the medieval Fortress of St. Michael are located on Mount Sv. Mihovil. From the fortress, views extend across more than 200 islands of the Zadar Archipelago and Kornati National Park. A three-kilometre paved road leads to the fortress and is suitable for cars, bicycles and pedestrians. This viewpoint belongs to Preko and is a distinct regional focus.
