Kukljica combines a long church history with coastal paths, coves and a variety of beach landscapes. The boat procession on 5 August provides a fixed cultural point of reference for your trip, while walks through olive groves and pine forest offer a different focus. When planning, you can choose between churches and the procession, time on the coastal paths, or a combination of both. Cycling, rowing and diving add further activities to the mix.

Churches and the Boat Procession

Kukljica’s traditional boat procession takes place on 5 August and has been celebrated since 1514. The image of the Virgin Mary is carried by boat from the votive church of Gospe od Sniga in Ždrelašćica Bay to the parish church of Sv. Pavla. The date and the transfer between the two churches give the tradition a clear historical and local connection.

The votive church of Gospe od Sniga is located in the Ždrelac Strait between Ugljan and Pašman. It features Baroque elements dating from the 17th century and has been protected as a cultural monument by the state since 1982. The parish church of Sv. Pavla is in the centre of Kukljica. The present-day church was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1666; construction of its bell tower began in 1741. The two churches offer different historical details to explore: the protected votive church and the building history of the centrally located parish church.

Another destination with its own history is the church of Sv. Jerolima in Kostanj Bay, northwest of Kukljica. Historians date it to the 14th century. The church was restored, completed and consecrated in July 1997. For those interested in churches and architectural history, it offers another historical point of reference alongside the two churches in the procession.

Coastal Paths and a Variety of Beaches

The Lungomare paths run along the coast and numerous coves. They offer opportunities for walks through olive groves and dense pine forest. This makes both coastal stretches and paths through different types of vegetation a focus for outdoor time. When planning, you can treat these walks as an activity in their own right, without equating them with a particular beach route.

The beaches also differ in their surfaces and surroundings. Sabuša combines sandy and concrete areas and is bordered by a pine forest. The naturist beach of Jelenica is near Sabuša and surrounded by olive trees. North of Kukljica, Kostanj Bay has a sandy beach suitable for anchoring small boats. These specific differences help you distinguish between beach locations based on what is known about their character and setting.

Rowing, Cycling and Diving

Small rowboats can be rented in Kukljica and at the Zelena Punta holiday resort. Check availability before your trip. Bicycles can also be rented at Zelena Punta; check whether rentals are available for your dates. You can cycle across the entire island. There is also a mountain biking trail on Pašman.

Diving comes with a specific requirement: a valid permit issued by the Croatian Diving Federation is required in Kukljica. Check the current permit procedures before your dive. This makes it easy to distinguish between the different activities: walks on the Lungomare paths take you through coastal and natural areas, rowboats and bicycles provide further ways to get around, and diving requires you to arrange a permit.
