Lepoglava brings together sacred art, the tradition of lace, and a landscape shaped by geology. The Crkva Sv. Marije, the Galerija čipke, and Gaveznica – Kameni vrh represent distinct cultural and natural highlights. The town also hosts a lace festival that has been held since 1997, along with routes of clearly varying lengths and destinations. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether church art, lace culture, or nature trails will be the main focus of your visit.

Church Art and Lace Culture

Construction of the Crkva Sv. Marije in Lepoglava began around 1400; the church was consecrated in 1415. Its interior features Baroque furnishings and altars, wood carvings, and frescoes by Ivan Krstitelj Ranger. The construction, which began around 1400, and the Baroque design bring together different periods in the town’s church history. Visitors interested in sacred architecture will find a distinctive highlight here, alongside the cultural attractions associated with lace.

The Međunarodni festival čipke has been held in Lepoglava since 1997 and traditionally takes place in September. The festival includes lace-making workshops and a market for traditional handicrafts and old crafts. The festival period therefore offers a distinct cultural reason to visit, separate from a trip focused on church art or nature trails. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

The Galerija čipke opened in December 2023 in a former storage room beneath the entrance to the Dom kulture. It is a center for numerous cultural events in Lepoglava. Its exhibitions bring together Lepoglava’s traditions and modern technology. As exhibition content may change, check what is currently on display before visiting.

Geology and Routes Through the Landscape

Gaveznica, also known as Kameni vrh, is a fossil volcano formed 22 million years ago. The area is considered the first known site of the semiprecious stone agate in Croatia. Visitor facilities have been developed at the Gaveznica – Kameni vrh geological natural monument. If you are planning an organized visit, check the arrangements in advance. Its geological features make it a different highlight of Lepoglava from its art and lace-making traditions.

The 13-kilometer route to Fairy Top starts in the southern part of Lepoglava and leads through the forest to a viewpoint. From there, the view extends across the Bednja, Ravna gora, Lepoglava, and Varaždin. The route passes rest areas, caves, and freshwater springs, including Zmržnjak, Maks well, and Bračko Cave. The route is used for hiking and cycling; its length and the natural features along the way give it a distinct character.

A shorter route option is the approximately five-kilometer Šumska-vila hiking trail in the eastern part of Lepoglava. It leads through forests and vineyards, past the Masni kamen waterfall and the Vukovec stream, to a mysterious stone altar. Unlike the route to Fairy Top, this trail’s destination is not a viewpoint overlooking several places, but the stone altar. Its approximate length of five kilometers and the sequence of landscape features can help you assess whether the route suits your preferred distance and destination.

The Stepinčev križni put offers a religious and historical perspective. Its 14 stations juxtapose the Passion of Jesus with the suffering of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac. The 1,600-meter route starts at the Stepinac monument in front of the parish church of Bezgrješnog začeća Blažene Djevice Marije, passes the Kaznionica, and ends at the chapel of Svetog Ivana Krstitelja on Mount Gorica. Its religious interpretation and named stations distinguish it from the nature trails.

Planning Your Trip

Lepoglava is near the two European motorway routes Zagreb–Graz and Zagreb–Budapest. This provides regional context for planning your journey; check the current route before setting off. The options for choosing a focus for your trip are distinct: the lace festival and gallery represent culture, the Crkva Sv.
