Ivančica makes Ivanec a destination for hiking and mountaineering, while trails also lead through the town’s history and to its cultural attractions. When planning, it is worth looking at the different route lengths, walking times and themes: alongside mountain hikes, you can choose a pilgrimage route, a circular trail at the foot of the mountain and a cultural route.

Hiking on and around Ivančica

Ivančica reaches a summit elevation of 1,060 metres. Four marked trails from the area around Ivanec lead to the summit. Options range from a gentle ascent suitable for family outings to more challenging trails for experienced hikers. Since trail conditions can change with the seasons, it is worth checking the current conditions before setting out.

The Ivanečki romarski put is a longer pilgrimage route: it starts in front of the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Ivanec and ends at the Marian shrine in Marija Bistrica. The 28-kilometre trip takes about eight hours, including a one-hour break. A white cross on a yellow square marks the trail. Designated rest areas and drinking-water springs also help with route planning. Check locally whether they are accessible before setting off.

The Ivanečka planinarska obilaznica offers a different kind of route. The marked circular trail connects eight places at the foot of Ivančica, is 18.5 kilometres long and can be completed in about six hours of walking. So when planning, the difference is not just in the distances: the approximate duration given for the pilgrimage route includes a break, while the duration for the circular hike is walking time.

Cultural Routes and the Mountaineering Museum

You can also explore the area by bicycle. The Ivanec Cycling Route is a 63-kilometre circular route, with starting points at Trg hrvatskih ivanovaca and on Frankopanska Street. The Ivanec Cool Tour cultural route can be explored on foot or by bicycle. These two options offer a different focus from the summit and circular hikes, and do not need to be planned as a single route.

The Mountaineering Museum was founded to promote mountaineering as a way of life, with Mount Ivančica as its central natural landmark. The museum hosts cultural events, exhibitions, book and project presentations, as well as the event “Noć muzeja.” School pupils and groups can visit the museum by prior arrangement. Check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

The visitor centre is located in the only surviving building in the Old Town of Ivanec complex. It offers tourist information, brochures and leaflets. Check the current visiting arrangements before you go. Archaeological excavations at the Stari grad Ivanec site have also uncovered finds from Roman times.

Town History, Water and Events

The Church of St Mary Magdalene in Ivanec was built in the 18th century and took its present form in the 19th century. The Bistrica stream also shapes the town: as it flows through the centre of Ivanec, it forms cascades. The difference in elevation between its source and mouth made it possible to build a water-powered system of 20 structures, including mills and sawmills.

The town park was transformed from a neglected pond and meadow into an English garden. One of its features is a pavilion used throughout the year for various events; the programme may vary. An old linden tree in the park is estimated to be over 600 years old and is regarded as a symbol of the town. The Ivanečki bajeri lakes formed after underground mining shafts collapsed and are now used for fishing.

Ivanec Town Days are celebrated on 24 June in honour of St John the Baptist. The multi-day programme includes exhibitions, concerts, and entertainment and sporting events. Dates and the programme may change from year to year, so check the latest event details before your trip. During Town Days, visitors can also enjoy the traditional dish Ivanečki kotlić. Its preparation and availability may vary from year to year.
