Beretinec lies in a rural landscape of gentle hills and green fields. The hilly southern part of the municipality of Općina Beretinec features forests and woodland, clearings, farmland, vineyards, orchards, and rural weekend and leisure homes. This variety provides a landscape setting for planning your trip, while the hiking lodges and historical attractions each offer their own highlights.

Hiking Lodges with Character

Vagon Hiking Lodge is located on the ridge of Grabrovice Hill, near the villages of Črešnjevo and Ledinec. It is a retired freight wagon converted for hiking purposes. In front of the lodge, there is a covered area with benches where you can rest. Its design draws attention to its repurposing, while the covered area offers a practical place to take a break.

Ledinec Hiking Lodge stands on a hilltop in the village of Ledinec, offering open views of Ivanščica. Whereas Vagon’s freight wagon is a feature in its own right, here the focus is on the elevated setting and the view. The two options appeal to different interests: repurposing and a sheltered place to rest at one, and a hilltop location with open views at the other.

Cultural Heritage and Park History

The Pietà Wayside Shrine is registered as a cultural asset in Beretinec under the designation Z-3942. Within the wider destination of Općina Beretinec, Šaulovec Castle represents another historical chapter. In 1791, it was converted from a former manor house into a castle; since 1970, the complex has been protected as a monument of park architecture. Together with the castle, some of the surviving furnishings illustrate the life of the middle nobility in the Varaždin area at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Beside Šaulovec Castle is a relatively small park: a decorative parterre garden lies in front of the main façade, while a landscaped park area extends behind the castle. The park was created in the late 19th century, and the parterre garden was laid out in the early 20th century. Since 2020, Varaždin County has owned Šaulovec Castle, and restoration work has begun. The building’s history, the park’s design, and the depiction of noble life thus point to different historical contexts.

Visits to the Wine Cellar

Individual and group visits to Vinarija Blaguški wine cellar are available on weekdays and weekends by prior arrangement. It offers wine tastings accompanied by cold cuts from local family farms. If you plan to include a tasting in your stay, check availability in advance.

Mountain Biking with a Defined Route Length

The XC Beretinec mountain bike route is 4.7 kilometres long. It was developed jointly by members of Brdsko-biciklistički klub ASI Varaždin and the municipality of Beretinec. The route is used for mountain bike training and for developing young riders. Check the current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
