Trakošćan combines castle history with parkland of forests and a lake. For trip planning, this puts the culture of the castle and the landscaped natural setting by the water at the heart of your visit. The wider Općina Bednja destination also offers its own hiking options.

Castle, Exhibition and Chapel

The history of Dvor Trakošćan dates back to the end of the 13th century: as a small observation fortress, the complex was part of northwestern Croatia’s defense system and was used to monitor the route from Ptuj towards the Bednja Valley. Trakošćan was developed into a grand castle set amid a forest park with rare trees, an artificial lake and garden buildings.

The permanent exhibition displays objects from the 15th to the 19th century in rooms whose historic interior layout has been preserved in its original form; it has been open to visitors since 1954. The Chapel of the Holy Cross also stands in the park. Built in 1754 in the Baroque Classicist style, it retains a complete set of furnishings for a church interior.

Lake, Forest Park and Trails

Lake Trakošćan was created in the mid-19th century by building a dam across the Bednja and covers about 17 hectares. In the wider Općina Bednja destination, the park and lake were laid out in the second half of the 19th century as a romantic landscape park and ornamental lake; the lake also served as a fishpond. The forest park covers 450 hectares of protected natural area. Its diverse flora and fauna combine with the lake to create a landscaped park setting.

The Put vila educational trail runs for around five kilometres around the lake and starts at the foot of the castle, at the entrance to the complex. Part of the lakeside path is closed because of a landslide. Check the local signs before setting out for a walk. The lake is also a special fishing spot; fish species include carp, grass carp, pike, catfish and trout. If you are planning a fishing trip, check access and conditions locally.

Hiking in the wider Općina Bednja destination

Two hours are indicated for each of two routes in Općina Bednja. The Trakošćan–Vrbanići–Ravna gora route starts at Hotel Trakošćan, opposite the castle. The Bednja–Prebukovje–Filićev dom route goes from Bednja via Prebukovje to Filićev dom. These time estimates offer a different planning measure from the educational trail by the lake, which is around five kilometres long: the regional routes have an estimated duration, while the educational trail has an approximate length. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out on a hike.

The municipality of Bednja is surrounded by Ivančica (1,061 m), Strahinjčica (847 m), Maceljska gora (715 m) and Ravna gora (686 m). Hiking is possible on Ravna gora; a viewpoint offers a view of Dvor Trakošćan, and footpaths lead to the castle. The timing of your trip may also matter: the Cvetlin Ethno Festival began in 1984 under the name Cvetlinski glazbeni susreti and traditionally takes place in mid-July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates before booking.

Getting There

Dvor Trakošćan is accessible by car via the main road connecting Zagreb and Maribor. If travelling by bus from Zagreb, you need to change in Varaždin: first travel to Varaždin, then continue to Trakošćan. As bus services and timetables can change, check your connection before travelling.
