Viticulture and historic churches give Putnikovic two distinctive themes for visitors. The town is known for viticulture and the production of the high-quality white wine Maraština. Several churches add to its cultural character, with buildings from different periods and a Roman stele built into one of them. When choosing accommodation, consider whether the history of viticulture, sacred architecture, or both will shape your stay.

The History of Viticulture at the Museum

The Museum of Viticulture and Viniculture – Putniković is intended as a cultural centre and a reference point for the viticulture and winemaking traditions of the Pelješac Peninsula. It is located at Putnikovići 14 in Putniković. The exhibition explores the subject from several angles: from vineyard work and grape processing to the long history of vines and viticulture.

The ground floor focuses on preparing vineyards, processing grapes, making wine, cooperage, transport, and wine sales. The first floor traces the history of vines and viticulture through prehistoric evidence, as well as the influences of the Bronze Age, the Greeks, the Romans, and later periods. Together, these areas connect practical stages of work with a cultural history reaching far back in time.

The attic focuses on traditional crafts and tools associated with shellfish farming, fishing, sheep raising, and textile production. The museum complex also includes a replica of a traditional Dalmatian house there. The exhibition thus looks beyond viticulture to other traditional activities, represented by their own objects and craft sections.

The museum offers guided tours in Croatian and English. A tasting area provides an opportunity to explore the traditional gastronomy and wine culture of the southern Adriatic. The museum shop sells bottled Pelješac wines, local olive oil, selected wine gift packs, and souvenirs; the selection may change. There is a large car park in front of the museum building. Churches from Different Periods

Putniković has several churches, most of them dating from the 15th to the 17th century. The parish church of Saint Mary Magdalene was built in 1749. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary contains a Roman stele from the 1st or 2nd century built into its walls. The churches therefore bring together different historical connections: the town’s architectural history and a Roman object preserved in a church building.

The Church of Saint Anne is considered a rare Baroque chapel preserved in its original form. Along with the older churches, it adds another architectural perspective to Putniković’s religious building history. Visitors interested in historic architecture will find not just one church, but several buildings connected to different periods.

Wine Traditions in a Regional Context

The “Dom vinarske tradicije” (House of Wine Traditions), located within the Putniković winery, has exhibitions and a tasting room. Wine and its traditions are also the focus here; check visiting details in advance. In the wider destination of Općina Ston, wine routes and visits to wineries and vineyards lead from Metohija, Boljenovići, and Sparagovići through Putniković to Dubrava. The local wine theme is therefore part of a broader regional experience that extends beyond the town.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

Putniković is located on County Road 414 between Dubrave and Ponikve. The road connects the town with other larger settlements on Pelješac. When choosing where to stay, the focus of your visit can help guide your decision: the wine museum and wine traditions on one hand, and churches and architectural history on the other. For practical planning, also take your journey into account; check road conditions and transport options before travelling.
