Four larger settlements—Murter, Betina, Jezera and Tisno—help orient visitors on the island of Murter. Betina’s wooden shipbuilding and the lanes of Staro Selo reveal different aspects of its cultural heritage; cycling routes, the coast and regional cuisine offer more ideas for your trip. This lets you explore Murter according to the interests that matter most to you.

Betina and its maritime heritage

At the Museum of Betina Wooden Shipbuilding, workshops give school-age children insights into Murter’s cultural heritage and traditional wooden shipbuilding. Participation requirements may vary. If you plan to attend one of these workshops, check the arrangements in advance.

The Betina gajeta is also part of the town’s maritime history: Croatia’s Ministry of Culture has protected it as part of the national intangible cultural heritage. Narrow lanes and traditional stone houses shape the townscape of Staro Selo. Visitors interested in architectural heritage can look beyond boatbuilding to the traditional layout of a settlement.

On foot, by bike and by the water

A 3.5-kilometre walking and cycling path connects Murter and Betina, making it possible to explore the entire island on foot or by bicycle. The island also has six easy-to-moderate cycling routes.

Three cycling routes pass through Tisno. One of them, Route 211, connects the island of Murter with the mainland in the hinterland of the municipality of Tisno. This distinguishes two aspects of route planning: paths on the island and a connection towards the mainland. Check the current conditions for this route locally, too.

Raduč is Murter’s highest peak and offers an almost 360-degree view. The island’s beaches generally have fine sandy seabeds and no strong waves. Diving and sailing are possible in the sea around Betina; check the relevant conditions and providers locally.

Island cuisine and seasonal events

Murter island cuisine is based on seafood, freshly caught fish, crabs, mussels, cephalopods, olive oil and vegetables. Traditional dishes include various brudets, buzara dishes and sočivo. The dishes available at any particular restaurant vary by restaurant and season.

The event calendar also reflects different seasonal highlights: the traditional Dan brganja takes place in Betina in August in honour of the kunjka shellfish. The international Big Game Fishing tournament is associated with Jezera and early autumn. Check the specific dates for your travel year before planning your trip around them.

Arriving via Tisno

When arriving by road, you cross the movable bridge in Tisno that connects Murter with the mainland; no ferry is needed for this crossing. Local conditions may temporarily affect bridge operations. If you’re planning to travel by road, take local conditions for the crossing into account.
