Okuklje combines a sheltered bay with a village history linked to the old town and its churches. In summer, it is considered an important tourist and nautical center. As you plan your trip, you can weigh up three specific aspects: the bay and harbor, historic buildings, and scenic routes. This can help you decide whether Okuklje matches the priorities you have for your trip.

Bay and Harbor

The Bay of Okuklje is called Porto Cammera in Italian. It is considered very well sheltered and popular with sailors; it is also described as protected from all winds. Boating visitors can find secluded pebble beaches and clear waters in the bay.

The harbor of Okuklje provides a safe haven for passenger ships when they would otherwise spend the night in Sobra–Zaglavac. A 34-meter stretch of the quay is used for nautical mooring; operational use may change. If your plans depend on a specific berth, confirm its current use in advance.

Restaurant Maestral also helps sailors with mooring. The bay and harbor give Okuklje a nautical character, while the beaches offer boating visitors another aspect of the bay to enjoy.

Old Town and History

Okuklje developed as a harbor and fishing settlement and became the parish center for Mljet’s eastern settlements. Historically, the village also served as a harbor for the settlement of Maranovići. The old town is close to the modern paved road. The road into Okuklje is winding, and the many bends are also associated with the village’s name.

The old town is home to the Abbey of Saint Dominic, which was renovated in 1990. The Church of Saint Nicholas was built between 1626 and 1667. After pirates burned it down in 1693, it was restored and blessed; its altar was consecrated on July 29, 1990. The two buildings offer different historical points of reference: the abbey is noted for its renovation, while the church’s construction and subsequent restoration are part of its history.

Scenic Routes

A cycling route branches off to the Church of Saint Nicholas, which is considered Okuklje’s finest viewpoint. A loop route associated with Okuklje is 7.3 kilometers long, climbs 188 meters, and consists of 4.3 kilometers of asphalt and 3 kilometers of gravel. The figures for distance, ascent, and surface give you specific points of comparison when choosing a route.

A hiking tour also includes a viewpoint above Okuklje: the Sobra–Saplunara tour.

Local Dining

Restaurant Maestral is considered a family-run business with a culinary tradition spanning three generations. Its cuisine is described as Mediterranean, with seafood and grilled specialties. As the menu and service may change, it is best to ask about both before planning a visit specifically for them. Sailors who need help with mooring should also confirm the current offer in advance. The address Okuklje 16 is associated with Agrotourism Baro; check whether it is currently open before planning a visit.
