Vele Srakane has distinctive natural features and archaeological traces: a grassland community, a prehistoric hillfort and a Roman gravestone built into a house. The island’s geological bedrock also shapes its natural character. Those choosing a destination for its landscape and history will find specific points of interest here. For practical planning, it is also worth noting that there are no cars on Vele or Male Srakane.
Loess, grassland and distinctive habitats
The grassland community Agrostetum maritimae is found on Vele Srakane and Male Srakane. Outside the Srakane Islands, this community is largely unknown. It offers nature lovers a specific point of interest, alongside the island group’s geological features.
Loess deposits are found on Vele Srakane, Male Srakane, Susak and Unije. They differ from the limestone and dolomite that predominate on the other Kvarner islands. There is almost no forest on the loess substrates of these four islands. This distinctive geological bedrock is also associated with plant and animal life not found on the other Kvarner islands. Geology, forest cover and natural habitats therefore form a connected theme. For a nature-focused visit, you can compare different island groups and their respective substrates.
Traces of fortifications and Roman times
There was a prehistoric hillfort on Vela Straža. The old castle on Vela Straža is a surviving remnant of a fortification that once served to defend against pirates. A Roman gravestone is built into the corner of the Skrivanić house.
These traces differ in form and scale: on the one hand, there is the prehistoric hillfort and the surviving remnant of a castle; on the other, a single gravestone forms part of a house corner. The history theme therefore includes both fortifications and an archaeological detail on a house. If you are interested in history, these different forms can shape how you see the island without needing to be grouped into a single era.
Getting there and practical planning
There are no cars on Vele or Male Srakane. So do not plan to drive on the islands. A landing from Mali Lošinj is listed for Gornja Trata. If travelling by boat is an option for you, check the current connection in advance. This lets you factor the journey into your stay without assuming a particular connection or timetable.
Culture in the wider destination of Mali Lošinj
The wider destination of Mali Lošinj offers other cultural and historical points of interest, distinct from the traces on Vele Srakane. The Museum of Apoxyomenos in the Kvarner Palace in the centre of Mali Lošinj opened in May 2016 and is dedicated to a single artefact. The Fritzi Palace displays two of Mali Lošinj’s most important art collections: the Piperata Collection of Old Masters and the Andro Vid Mihičić Collection of Croatian Masters. The latter comprises around 360 works of art.
In Osor, the Archaeological Collection is housed in a Renaissance building constructed in the first half of the 15th century and protected as a cultural monument in 1964. The freestanding circular tower complex, Kula, in the centre of Veli Lošinj was built in the 15th century. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of Veli Lošinj, its immediate surroundings and the southern part of the island of Lošinj, from prehistory to the present, with particular emphasis on maritime and tourism traditions.
