In Punat, maritime infrastructure, coastal scenery and an unusually rich cultural offering come together. Punat Marina is located in Puntarska draga and has around 1,200 berths. Marina services include boat services; smaller boats up to five metres can be launched and hauled out in the central harbour. For guests looking for accommodation in Punat, the water also shapes travel plans: Košljun can only be reached by sea, and visitor boats depart from Punat’s shore. Check seasonal boat availability before your trip.

Harbour, Bay and the Island of Košljun

Punat lies in the sheltered Puntarska draga. Within the wider destination of Općina Punat, this bay is about three kilometres long and up to about two kilometres wide. The narrow Buka sea channel connects it to the open sea and is about 150 to 200 metres wide. Narrow stone lanes shape the coastal character of the town; nearby are pebble beaches, vineyards and olive groves. Walks through the town and trips on the water thus offer different sides of a stay in Punat.

Košljun brings nature and culture together on an island that has been protected as a special forest nature reserve since 1969. A total of 540 plant species have been identified there; landscape features include an olive grove and a dense forest of holm oaks and flowering ash trees. Košljun has four museums, with archaeological, religious, ethnographic and natural history collections. The ethnographic museum includes objects belonging to fishermen and farmers from Krk, as well as folk costumes from across the island.

The monastery library also offers a special focus on cultural history, with around 30,000 titles. These include a Ptolemy atlas printed in Venice in 1511, of which three copies survive. If you plan to visit the museums and collections, check their opening hours as well as seasonal boat availability.

Shepherds’ Trails and Coastal Karst

The Pastirske staze lead from Punat towards the highest peaks on the island of Krk, including Obzovo at 568 metres. Along the way, dry-stone walls, shepherds’ shelters, rainwater cisterns, sheep pens, karst pools and pastures shape the landscape; viewpoints open up views across the surroundings. For the route to the lower uplands on the shepherds’ trails in the wider destination of Općina Punat, a duration of 30 minutes to one hour is given. The ground is rocky and, in places, covered with grass or soil. This time estimate applies to the lower uplands, not to an ascent to the peaks.

In the Pastirske staze area, you may encounter protected griffon vultures, as well as deer, hares, foxes, butterflies, lizards, snakes and frogs. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. The Tri križi themed trail has a different focus: it shares information about coastal karst and offers views of Puntarska draga. The trails therefore differ not only in their landscapes, but also in what they highlight along the way.

Experiences on and by the Water

The underwater pirate park in Punat offers a guided underwater walk for non-divers at the main beach. It focuses on marine flora and fauna, as well as a pirate treasure theme. As seasonal operating arrangements may change, checking before your trip is recommended. Taxi boats depart from Punat for trips to remote white pebble beaches; these trips may be seasonal and weather-dependent. In the wider destination of Općina Punat, other listed water and beach activities include water skiing, parasailing, sailing, surfing, Aquagan and beach volleyball. The NAS Sailing Center in Punat offers a sailing school and daily sailboat rentals; availability may be seasonal.

Olive Oil and Krk Cuisine

Olive groves and local Puntar olive oil are part of the region’s identity. In the wider destination of Općina Punat, the Stari Toš Interpretation Centre presents the history of olive growing, as well as harvesting and processing in Punat. It preserves fully intact equipment used to produce olive oil traditionally. The “Toš” Gallery in the old town displays paintings, sculptures and other artworks in an almost authentic ethnographic setting that has grown out of a former olive mill.

Menus also reflect Punat’s connection to Krk and the Kvarner region: restaurants and taverns serve, among other things, Krk lamb with šurlice, homemade pršut, Kvarner scampi and fish with Punat olive oil. The selection varies by establishment and season. This gives you a varied mix of coastal trails, maritime experiences, island culture and regional cuisine for your plans—without assuming that every activity follows the same schedule or is available in the same season.
