The Krk Bridge connects the island of Krk with the mainland. Within the Municipality of Omišalj, two distinct ways of exploring come together: Omišalj, with its Roman heritage and landscaped surroundings, and Njivice, with its lake, forest paths and beach. This contrast helps you avoid reducing the municipality to just one type of excursion. As a nearby landmark, Rijeka Airport lies about one kilometre east of Omišalj.
Roman traces and a shaped landscape
The Roman town of Municipium Flavium Fulfinum was established at Sepen Bay in the 1st century. The Fulfinum Mirine complex comprises the remains of an ancient municipium and an early Christian basilica. Together, these sites tell of different periods of history: from the Roman town to a later religious building. Fortičina Fortress adds an older fortification to the picture. It is based on traces of a watchtower whose origins are interpreted as either late antique or early medieval; both datings remain possible.
The landscape around Omišalj has also been shaped. Dubec Park is considered a monument of landscape architecture and has landscaped paths and resting places. Its 995-metre-long main path, along with about 300 metres of secondary paths and stone steps, connects Omišalj with the coastal promenade and bathing area.
Another cultural event is the Omišalj Rosette women's klapa festival, held every year on 4 August in Omišalj Square. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check that year's programme before travelling.

The educational trail between Biserujka Cave and Slivanjska Bay offers a different kind of outing. It has five information panels and is an easy walk of about 30 minutes. Slivanjska Bay lies partly within the Municipality of Omišalj. The Cerova Trail from Njivice also combines nature and cultural history: it passes through a downy oak forest, by dry stone walls and the remains of a Mošun, as well as the Mohorov archaeological site with Roman remains. Along this trail, you will encounter both landscape features and traces of human history.
