The Baška Tablet leads directly to a specific piece of church history in Jurandvor: it was found in 1851 in St. Lucy’s Church, where it originally served a liturgical function. The Baška Tablet–Zakam Trail also begins in Jurandvor, passing through a pine forest to a viewpoint. When choosing accommodation in Jurandvor, it helps to set a clear priority: should your stay focus more on the historical sites or on a hike? These are two different priorities for planning your trip.

The tablet and the St. Lucy’s Church complex

St. Lucy’s Church was built at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries on the remains of an early Christian basilica. The Baška Tablet originally served as a partition inscription between the monks’ choir and the nave. Its position explains the connection between writing and the church interior: it separated two clearly defined areas of the church. A full-size replica is located in the church at the original position; check access arrangements before your visit. The original has been in the atrium of the palace of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1934. This makes it possible to distinguish the findspot, the replica’s location, and the original’s place of preservation as three separate stages in the story. The remains around St. Lucy’s were brought together as an archaeological park in 2000. The St. Lucy’s Abbey complex also includes the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary and a restored residential building of the monastery. The church, chapel, and residential building add further elements of the historic complex to the story of the inscription.

Hiking toward Zakam

For outdoor activity, the Baška Tablet–Zakam hiking trail starts in Jurandvor and climbs through a pine forest to Zakam. It reaches a viewpoint overlooking Baška, St. John’s Church, and the island of Prvić. These offer different focuses for trip planning: at St. Lucy’s, the architecture and inscription take center stage; on the trail to Zakam, the forest ascent and the views are defining features.

A landmark at the entrance to the village

At the entrance to Jurandvor stands a sculpture of the Glagolitic letter L, dedicated to St. Lucy. It is 4.45 meters high and weighs 20 tonnes. Unlike the tablet, which originally marked a boundary in the church interior, the sculpture presents a single letter as a work of art. In Jurandvor, Glagolitic script can thus be encountered in two different forms: as an inscription with a specific function inside the church and as a monumental sign at the entrance to the village.

Hiking in the wider destination of Općina Baška

In the wider destination of Općina Baška, the Glagolitic Trail of Baška runs through the Baška landscape. There, 35 stone sculptures represent the letters of the Croatian Glagolitic alphabet. Eleven officially marked trails start in Baška, Jurandvor, Zarok, and Draga Bašćanska. Their durations range from a two-hour walk along the river to a full-day crossing of the Moon Plateau. Comparing them helps with planning: a riverside walk and a full-day crossing require different amounts of time. Alongside the individual Zakam route, you can also consider a more extensive hiking itinerary in the wider destination of Općina Baška.
