Religious sites include the parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary to Saint Elizabeth. Other churches or chapels are dedicated to Saints Fabian and Sebastian, Saint Roch and Saint Joseph. Saint Elizabeth is the patron saint of the village. Several religious dedications thus stand alongside the name that has particularly shaped the village’s history.
The communal pastures associated with Draga Bašćanska reveal another side of its history. Around a dozen shepherds’ cisterns, locally called “bunari,” are located there. As features of a historic cultural landscape, they point to the connection between the pastures and local shepherds. Together with the churches, they offer a second way to explore the village: beyond its religious sites, through its landscape and the features passed down through generations.
Trails and culture in the wider Municipality of Baška
In the wider destination of the Municipality of Baška, eleven officially marked trails start in Baška, Jurandvor, Zarok and Draga Bašćanska. They range from a two-hour riverside walk to a full-day crossing of the Moon Plateau. A short trail from Jurandvor connects the Abbey of St. Lucy with a viewpoint overlooking Baška and the island of Prvić. The Church of St. Lucy also offers a historical connection: the Baška Tablet was found there, and a replica remains in the church. The church was probably built around the turn of the 12th century on the remains of an early Christian basilica; it did not take on its present form until the 14th century.
The Baška Glagolitic Trail passes through the village’s paved streets and the surrounding expansive natural landscape. The Municipality of Baška also has fixed religious dates among its regional traditions: on the feast day of Saint Lucy, 13 December, a small loaf called “hlipčić” is still thrown from the bell tower in Jurandvor. On 15 August, pilgrims carry a statue of the Mother of God by candlelight up the steps above Batomalj.
