Vela Luka can be discovered through a variety of experiences: Vela Spila is a significant archaeological cave site in the Mediterranean region, mosaics feature in public spaces, and hiking trails lead to views of the bay and islands. A local sweet treat is also part of the town’s character. Archaeological history, art in everyday life and paths through the landscape all come together here.

Vela Spila and cultural traces

Vela Spila was inhabited from the late Palaeolithic to the Middle Bronze Age. The site lies on the southern slope of Pinski rat hill, 130 metres above Kale Bay in Vela Luka. A hiking trail leads from Vela Luka to this important archaeological site. Its long history of habitation gives the cave a special place among archaeological sites in the Mediterranean region.

Archaeological material from Vela Spila is also held in the museum collections of the Vela Luka Cultural Centre. They are housed in a former school building constructed in the second half of the 19th century. Alongside archaeological finds, the collection includes works of modern and contemporary art. The holdings thus bring together traces of the site and more recent art.

Another cultural trace can be found in public spaces: mosaics created during the 1968 international artists’ gathering are located in public areas, along promenades and in public institutions in Vela Luka. Unlike the archaeological finds, they are found at various locations around the town. Their origins in an artists’ gathering link the mosaics to Vela Luka’s more recent cultural history.

Hiking trails and views

The fully marked Hum hiking trail starts at Gospa od zdravlja in Bobovišća. It is 2.5 kilometres long, is considered easy and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Along the way, views open up over Vela Luka Bay, the sea and neighbouring islands. The hike can therefore be gauged by both its approximate duration and its stated distance.

The fully marked Dub circular hiking trail passes through wooded areas and offers views of Vela Luka and its surroundings. You can start in Bobovišća at Gospe od zdravlja or at the Tommy supermarket. Hum and Dub thus differ in the planning details described: the length and approximate duration are given for Hum, while Dub is distinguished by its circular route and two starting points. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

Vela Luka’s outdoor offering includes more than 100 kilometres of hiking and cycling trails. They pass through centuries-old olive groves, along beaches, and through vineyards and pine forests. Individual routes may change. The landscapes provide a variety of settings, with olive groves and vineyards alongside coastal stretches and pine forests.

Trail races also start at Vela Spila: Vela strka is 22 kilometres long, and Mala strka is 11 kilometres. The two races are part of a recurring event; details may change from year to year. If you would like to include one of the races in your plans, check the information for the relevant year. According to a report dated 30 April 2026, pilgrims visit Vela Luka on the Camino Korčula individually and in larger and smaller organised groups.

Ošjak is protected as a forest park. This protected status adds another aspect of the area to its archaeological and cultural themes. Together with the marked hiking trails, it reflects a range of interests, from prehistoric finds to nature and outdoor activities.

Lumblija before All Saints’ Day

Lumblija is a ceremonial sweet bread and an aromatic dessert prepared in Vela Luka in the lead-up to All Saints’ Day. The multi-day “Stajun od lumblije” event includes workshops where participants can make their first Lumblija. The tradition is therefore tied both to a particular time of year and to preparing the pastry together. Event dates vary from year to year; if you are planning to travel specifically for a workshop, check the dates for the relevant year.
