Three themes make a trip to Žrnovo especially appealing: forest nature, cultural history and local cuisine. The Pavja Luka botanical trail and the Kočje forest reserve offer different ways to experience nature. The history of theatre, an ethnographic collection and traditional customs provide tangible points of interest for culture enthusiasts. If you plan to visit for a performance or event, arrange your plans around the relevant dates.

Forest Nature and Trails

The Kočje Special Forest Vegetation Reserve in Žrnovo has been protected since 1962. If you plan a visit, check the access conditions in advance.

The Pavja Luka botanical trail is 3.3 kilometres long and passes through typical Mediterranean forest vegetation and preserved holm oak areas. Information boards along the trail have been renewed. If you would like to use the information on site, check whether the boards are currently in place.

Cultural History in Žrnovo and Postrana

The historic Kazalište u Pavuleta is in Postrana, a hamlet of Žrnovo, and was founded in 1921. The theatre became a cultural centre and meeting place for the residents of Postrana and Žrnovo. Its history thus combines a specific founding date with a community role in both places. Postrana also has stone houses and narrow, stepped lanes that define the hamlet’s architectural character.

The Church of St Martin, mentioned since the 14th century and containing locally carved Baroque altars, stands between the hamlets of Žrnovo. Žrnovo’s cultural heritage also includes the Jakasova Cave archaeological site, several churches and the remains of a Roman cistern. These examples range from Roman remains to a church with a medieval reference, offering a variety of architectural and historical points of reference for the area’s history.

Collection, Customs and Local Cuisine

The Pavle Šain ethnographic collection in Postrana can be visited by prior arrangement. It is housed in an old stone house preserved with its original features. The approach from the road involves steep lanes and stone-paved steps; take this terrain into account when planning and arrange your visit in advance.

The collection includes a hand-operated stone grain mill and an animal-powered olive press. The two devices demonstrate different traditional processing methods and give the collection a tangible connection to everyday work.

Moštra is a traditional cultural heritage practice celebrated especially in Žrnovo. It is performed at village festivals and religious holidays; specific dates may vary. If you would like to see a performance, check the event dates in advance. The traditional Makarunada also includes tastings and workshops on making Žrnovo makaruni. Dates and programmes may vary, so it is advisable to check the latest event information before your trip.

Žrnovo makaruni are handmade pasta made with flour, eggs, oil and water; they are served with meat sauce. The Makarunada puts the preparation itself in the spotlight and combines it with tastings. This lets you discover the local speciality not only as a dish, but also by learning about how it is made.

Cycling Route and Trail Lengths

The official cycling route 2, “Eno gastro”, passes through Prvo Selo, Žrnovo, Kampuš and Postrana. Another cycling route is named “Žrnovo”; it is a 17.4-kilometre circular route. Before setting out on a planned bike ride, check the current route, as conditions may change.

Comparing its length with the 3.3-kilometre Pavja Luka botanical trail makes two different route formats clear: a botanical trail and a longer circular cycling route.
