Brna lies on the southern side of Korčula in a sunny bay, surrounded by pine forests, olive groves, citrus and fig trees, and vineyards. The deep, sheltered bay provides a safe harbor for boats of all kinds. Water sports, beaches, walking and cycling trails, and Pošip shape the activities available locally and in the wider destination of Općina Smokvica. If you are considering Brna as a place to stay, you can make your choice based on whether you want to focus on the bay and beach, hiking trails, or wine and local history.

Bay, Water Sports and Beaches

Sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat trips to nearby islands are among the activities in the sheltered bay. Availability and providers may vary. Fishing is also a regular activity in Brna Bay.

Descriptions of the beaches vary: Žal is shallow and quiet, and lies next to a children's playground. The wide, equally shallow bay of Istruga is about a ten-minute walk from the center of Brna. It offers swimming, therapeutic mud, and tennis courts; a walking path leads toward Pinčena. Check the condition of the tennis courts before visiting.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The route to Istruga Bay leads from Smokvica to Brna and then continues on to the bay. A 5 km hiking trail through Brna leads to the Veliki Zaglav viewpoint; the path toward the sea passes through Kosirna and an olive grove. Trail conditions may vary. In the wider destination of Općina Smokvica, there are numerous hiking and walking trails through olive groves and vineyards. The Trail of Pošip is 12.2 km long and takes 1.5 hours. The 5 km trail through Brna and the longer Trail of Pošip therefore offer routes of different lengths.

Two circular cycling routes also pass through Brna. One runs from Smokvica through Brna and back; another passes through Smokvica, Brna, Prižba, and Prišćapac. Routes may change if their course or signage is updated.

Pošip and Local History

Brna was established in the 19th century as an export harbor for wines from Smokvica. You can enjoy local Pošip at restaurants overlooking the bay. This connects the town’s maritime history with the wine tradition of the wider destination of Općina Smokvica.

Pošip is Croatia’s first legally protected white wine and originates in the hills of Smokvica. More than 150 years ago, it was discovered in the fields below Smokvica on the hill of Pinćaluš. Smokvica and neighboring Čara form the most important Pošip wine-growing area; most vineyard work there is traditionally done by hand. Numerous local wineries in Smokvica offer tastings. Check the dates in advance.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Općina Smokvica

The area’s architectural history also offers specific points of interest: the Church of Sveti Mihovil was built in 1372 on a hill above Smokvica. Sveti Ivan Krstitelj dates from 1391 and is near the Siknica field and the Studenac pond. Sveti Vid was built in 1420 on Marca Vrh hill near Siknica. There is also a 17th-century Venetian loggia next to Smokvica’s parish church.
