Humac is protected in Croatia as an ensemble of rural cultural heritage. The settlement consists of 140 small houses, built almost entirely of stone. The communal courtyards contain rainwater channels, wine presses and bread ovens. These details draw attention not only to individual buildings, but also to the connection between house, courtyard and everyday life in the past.

Stone Houses and Historical Layers

The settlement was founded in the 13th century; its present-day appearance dates from the 17th century. The cottages in Humac served for centuries as seasonal homes for owners from Vrisnik, who worked their fields. The restored parish church of Saints John and Paul is also part of the village’s history: surrounded by cypress trees, it was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The founding period, present-day appearance and church construction mark three distinct historical stages.

Collections and Nature

In Humac, you can visit the winegrowers’ collection at the Museum of the Municipality of Jelsa. There is also a small museum with tools and mementos from everyday life in the past. Visiting arrangements for this small museum may vary.

The GrapÄŤeva Cave is nearby. It contains stalactites and stalagmites, and has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1964. Regular guided tours are offered during the summer months. Check tour dates and arrangements before your visit.

A telescope on a small hill outside Humac offers magnified views of Hvar’s sea and landscape, as well as Brač and the mainland. The lack of street lighting in the village supports stargazing. This gives you a choice of different perspectives: looking at the landscape through the telescope or gazing up at the starry sky.

Cycling Routes and Getting Around

The 23.9-kilometre NA VRH cycling route passes through Humac and connects the village with Jelsa, Pitve and Martinica. HUMAC is a 32-kilometre circular route that starts and ends in Humac, combining paved and gravel roads. In terms of length, HUMAC is the longer of the two routes; NA VRH connects several villages, while HUMAC loops back to its starting point. Check the route and conditions before setting out.

Humac is near State Road 116, which crosses the centre of Hvar between Sućuraj and Hvar and runs via Jelsa and Stari Grad. When looking for a holiday apartment in Humac, you can match your travel interests with these local highlights: cultural heritage, collections, cycling and stargazing. If you plan to take a guided tour of Grapčeva Cave, bear in mind that tours are offered during the summer months and check the dates in advance.
