Komin stretches for around two kilometres parallel to the Neretva and lies below Donja gora. The river and hillside give the town two clear geographical features. The port on the Neretva is accessible to boats with a draft of up to 3.5 metres. Draft refers to how far a boat extends below the water; the figure does not refer to its length.
Transport routes and local history
A road built by Napoleon runs through Komin. A railway line also passes through the town and was built after the Second World War. Komin railway station is classified as an individual cultural heritage site. The road and railway thus represent different historical periods; the station’s classification adds a heritage conservation perspective to the history of transport.
After a malaria epidemic, Komin was relocated around six kilometres upstream about 400 years ago. This move adds an earlier turning point in settlement development to the history of transport routes. The roughly two kilometres describe Komin’s extent parallel to the Neretva; the six kilometres refer to the town’s earlier relocation upstream. One measurement concerns the settlement’s layout, the other Komin’s historical relocation.
Church and cultural heritage
The parish church of St. Anthony of Padua stands above the village. It is built of white stone from Selca on the island of Brač and has a single-storey bell tower. The sanctuary ends in a semicircular apse—a rounded end to the church interior. Its location, building material and design offer different ways to appreciate the church.
The character of the settlement is also part of its cultural heritage: Ruralna cjelina Komin is recognised as a rural cultural and historic ensemble. Its planning classification may change following future heritage conservation work.
Fruit growing and regional food culture
Peaches, nectarines, plums, watermelons, pomegranates, figs, grapes and apples grow in the area around Komin. In the Neretva Valley, mandarins are considered the best-known fruit; this description applies to the valley, while the long list of crops refers to Komin. Eel is considered characteristic of the area around Komin. This distinguishes the specific fruit growing described locally from the broader culinary character of the valley.
Routes, river and activities
Nearby, the Tragom bunkera themed trail leads to eight bunkers and combines local history with nature. History can therefore be encountered not only in the church’s architecture but also along a trail. A traditional Neretva boat photo safari passes through narrow river channels nearby. For kitesurfing, the Kiteboarding Club Komin-Neretva, associated with Komin, offers a kitesurfing school and equipment rental. The trail, boat trip and kitesurfing each offer a different way to explore the surroundings.
