In Metković, natural history and culture come together with routes along the Neretva. The Natural History Museum is dedicated to the nature of the Neretva Delta; nearby in Vid, the archaeological site of Narona offers another perspective on the area’s history. The theatre, church and protected landscapes provide further points of interest. This makes it possible to plan city visits, river routes and nature trails according to their respective themes.
Natural history at the Prirodoslovni muzej Metković
The permanent exhibition at the Prirodoslovni muzej Metković features explanatory panels, habitat dioramas, preserved animals and multimedia audiovisual displays. The first room focuses on the geological and biospeleological features of the Neretva Delta. The exhibition concludes with short films and quizzes for children. Those interested in the region’s natural history will find a variety of ways to explore it here, from recreated habitats to films and quizzes.
The museum provides access for people with disabilities and for those who have difficulty with stairs. Check the specific access arrangements before your visit. Groups of more than ten people can arrange a visit outside regular opening hours; make such arrangements in advance.
Cultural attractions in Metković and Vid
The theatre in Metković has an indoor stage with 480 seats and an open-air stage with 800 seats. The parish church of St. Ilija dates from 1870. A description from 2023 highlights its Neo-Romanesque architecture and stone rose window.
The archaeological site of ancient Narona is located in Vid, near Metković. The Narona Museum is described as Croatia’s first in-situ museum. It was built over the remains of the Augusteum, a temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus that was built in 10 BC. The area therefore offers two distinct historical themes: the architecture of the parish church in Metković and the archaeological site of Narona in Vid.
Neretva routes and training
The Dolina Neretve Južni krug cycling route starts in Metković and heads towards Zažablje. After reaching Blace, it returns to Metković along the main course of the Neretva. The Srcem doline Neretve route also reaches Metković, but then continues south along a maintained path beside the Neretva. The Južni krug is defined by its return to the town; Srcem doline Neretve continues south beyond Metković.
Kayaking and canoeing are also part of the town’s described connection with the river: in 2024, the Neretva in Metković was described as a training venue for kayakers and canoeists. The routes and training use appeal to different interests: a named cycling route that returns to Metković, a path that continues from there alongside the river, and watersports in a training context.
Landscape and trails
The protected landscape area of Predolac-Šibenica has educational trails and pedestrian promenades. Visitor infrastructure was documented as completed in 2021. Predolac-Šibenica is also listed among the protected areas around Metković, with a designation year of 1968. Pod Gredom, near Metković, is a protected wetland designated in 1974. These places offer different landscape experiences: educational trails and promenades in the landscape area, as well as the designated protected areas of Predolac-Šibenica and Pod Gredom.
Getting there
Metković can be reached via the A1 motorway and the D8–D9 Adriatic roads. There is also a landing on the Neretva in the town centre. When choosing your destinations, you can consider the differences between the places and routes mentioned: Metković combines a museum, theatre and connection to the river; Vid is known for Narona, while Predolac-Šibenica and Pod Gredom add protected landscapes.
