On Lopud, historic buildings and landscape offer different ways to experience the island. Knežev dvor, Đorđić-Mayneri Park and the churches provide points of interest for culture enthusiasts; protected nature, Mediterranean vegetation and routes to Šunj Bay add a landscape perspective. For trip planning, it is also important to note that jazz and literary events take place in separate periods in late August and September.

Heritage on Lopud

Knežev dvor was built after the Principality of Lopud was founded in 1456; construction was completed in 1508. The building is considered one of the area’s most representative examples of architecture from the second half of the 15th century. The restored complex showcases Dubrovnik’s maritime tradition. Check which presentation details are currently in effect before your visit.

The historic Đorđić-Mayneri Park covers 13,027 square metres and is considered one of the most valuable examples of park heritage in the Dubrovnik area. The religious buildings also span different historical periods: the Church of Our Lady of Šunj dates from the 13th century and was extended through the 17th century. Its collection includes parts of a polyptych from 1452 and a significant altarpiece by Jacopo Palma the Elder.

The Franciscan Monastery and the Church of Our Lady of the Cave are other historic religious sites on Lopud. The Spanish fortress of Sutvrač is dated to 1563. Together, these buildings offer different points of interest for exploring the island’s architectural and religious history.

Landscape and Routes to Šunj Bay

Lopud Bay is designated as a particularly valuable natural landscape. The protected landscape area includes habitat types and the coastal belt; views towards the historic centre from both land and sea have also been preserved. Lopud is covered in lush Mediterranean vegetation and offers walks along the coast.

A path leads from the settlement of Lopud to sandy Šunj Bay on the opposite side of the island. This makes the bay a specific destination for anyone wishing to combine a walk with a visit to the other side of the island. Conditions along the path can vary seasonally; take this into account when planning.

Festivals and Culinary Highlights

The Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival brings concerts, masterclasses and workshops to the island in late August. In late September, Ponta Lopud Book Bridge brings writers, thinkers and readers together for discussions and readings. The events have different focuses: jazz, masterclasses and workshops in late August, and literary discussions and readings in late September. Programmes vary by edition; check current dates and details before your trip.

Traditional Dalmatian dishes associated with Lopud include grilled fish, black risotto and octopus salad. The actual selection varies by menu and restaurant.
