In the Municipality of Velika Ludina, you can discover a transition between rolling hills and river floodplains: in the north, hills and slopes of the low Moslavačka gora shape the landscape, while to the south a plain opens out along the Sava. Two circular cycling routes of different lengths, medieval ruins and regional apple culture give your stay several other clear themes. The municipality is located in Sisak-Moslavina County, Croatia. This offers several ways to experience a visit: through the natural landscape, cultural heritage and regional cuisine.
Hills, Valleys and Floodplains
In the north, forests alternate with agricultural land, and settlements lie in the valleys. The southern part is a plain along the Sava, bordered by the Česma to the west and the Lonja to the south. Around 16 square kilometres of the municipality’s southern territory belong to the floodplain of Lonjsko polje. The area that extends into the Municipality of Velika Ludina is part of a protected wetland, a Ramsar site and an Important Bird Area. The landscape therefore ranges from wooded slopes and valleys to a protected floodplain.
Two Circular Cycling Routes of Different Lengths
The 16.5-kilometre Ludinska jabuka route begins and ends in Velika Ludina. Along the way, it passes through Mala Ludina, Kompator, Grabričina and Katoličko Selišće before returning to Velika Ludina. Much of the route runs through apple and pear orchards; the blossom gives it a distinctive seasonal character, though the timing varies from year to year.
The Jelengradska is longer, at 23 kilometres, and is also a circular route. It passes through Katoličko Selišće, Ruškovica, Jelengrad and Gornja Vlahinička, and ends in Velika Ludina. To compare the routes by length, you can set the 16.5 kilometres of the Ludinska jabuka against the 23 kilometres of the Jelengradska. Both routes also feature cultural and historical heritage and gastronomy at rural households. Details of the Ludinska jabuka route may change when signage or surfaces are updated; check the information before setting out.
Castles, a Church and Cultural Heritage
Jelengrad Castle dates from the 13th century and is of archaeological and historical value. Košutgrad is dated to 1334: the medieval ruin is overgrown with forest, and a fragment of the stone wall remains. Both places give the municipality’s cultural heritage a clear historical connection, without limiting its history to a single century.
The parish of St. Michael the Archangel also has a long history: it is mentioned in canonical visitation records from 1715. The brick tower of St. Michael’s Church is a distinctive feature of the wider Moslavina region and is visible from a considerable distance. A work from the Straub family workshop in Velika Ludina, associated with the altar of St. Michael, is considered one of the most representative Late Baroque sculptural works in north-western Croatia.
KUD Mijo Stuparić is also part of cultural life. The association preserves original Moslavina songs, dances and traditional costumes. The Proljetni koncert, Božićni koncert and Miholje u Ludini are associated with it. The events programme may change from year to year.
Apples, Events and Regional Cuisine
The Municipality of Velika Ludina is known for fruit and wine growing, particularly apples. Favourable agroclimatic conditions support cultivation, though harvest volumes may vary from year to year. The traditional event “Oj, jabuko crveniko” takes place in Katoličko Selišće and marks the beginning of the apple harvest in Moslavina each year.
Moslavacka priča restaurant prepares traditional dishes using local ingredients. Its weekend offering includes the Moslavački stol, featuring Moslavina and game specialities. The dishes and menu may change; check what is on offer before your visit.
Accommodation and Planning Your Visit
There is a specific accommodation option for an overnight stay in Velika Ludina: a report dated 28 July 2026 mentioned a newly renovated house with 40 beds. It offered accommodation for users of the sports hall and other visitors, and was also available to tourists. Check access and booking conditions before travelling.
The new sports hall in Velika Ludina has almost 500 seats and is intended for indoor sports as well as various events. Together with the cycling routes, cultural heritage and regional cuisine, it gives you more than one reason to plan your stay around your own interests.
