In Topusko, Gothic landmarks and distinctive landscape features come together with thermal waters and designated routes. A 5.3-kilometre loop, classified as easy, leads to several attractions in the town. For planning purposes, it is worth distinguishing this walk from the separately described cycling route and the seasonal options around the thermal pools.

Explore Topusko on foot

The easy circular route starts at Top-Terme and passes English Park, Jupiter’s Altar, Opatovina Park, the Gothic portal, Mollinary Spring, and Catholic and Orthodox churches. At 5.3 kilometres, with a set sequence of stops, it offers a specific way to discover the town’s local and cultural history in a single loop. If you prefer walking to cycling, this is a separate, manageable route option.

Gothic landmarks and traces of earlier history

The Opatovina Portal preserves the only surviving Gothic church façade of the Cistercian Abbey of Topusko. It is 23 metres high. Opatovina Park also contains the remains of an archaeological monument associated with the Gothic entrance portal of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this way, a surviving architectural landmark and archaeological remains stand side by side in the townscape.

Another testament to local history is Kamena Spomenica on Babićev brijeg. Names, initials, dates and other markings are carved into the exposed rock. Wooded Nikolino brdo lies in central Topusko and reaches an elevation of 184 metres. Stone remains and depressions associated with a fortified town attributed to King Andrew II have been preserved there. The names “Blatne” and “Crijetne Kupke” refer to thermal mud and peat, which were used for treatments.

Protected status is also part of the town’s cultural character: the cultural and historical complex of Topusko is classified as protected cultural heritage under the designation Z-4136. If you are planning a visit focused on heritage conservation, please check the applicable protection requirements. Part of the protected Petrova Gora Significant Landscape lies within the municipality of Topusko. It is preserved for its forest habitats and landscape-history values.

Thermal waters and seasonal planning

The Top-Terme pool complex has five pools filled with thermal water, with different depths and temperatures. It operates seasonally. Before travelling, check whether a visit falls within your travel dates. The regional tourism description of Lječilište Topusko refers to thermal water from three main springs and several smaller ones, used to treat injuries and conditions affecting the locomotor system, nervous system and musculoskeletal system. The pool complex and the described therapeutic use can therefore be understood as distinct aspects of the thermal-water offering.

Cycling route, events and getting around

For the Topusko–Ponikvari–Topusko route, the destination plan gives a distance of 6.7 kilometres and a riding time of less than one hour as a guide. Route conditions and signage may change; check the current route before setting out. The “Putevima bana Jelačića” Biciklijada is held annually in the Topusko destination area. If you would like to combine your trip with the cycling event, check the latest dates.

Restaurants in Topusko have also taken part in a programme celebrating traditional Croatian flavours. Special menus of at least three courses and a glass of a local drink were offered. If you are planning your trip around this culinary offering, check the event dates. Parking zones have been established in the town centre; as parking arrangements may change, check the regulations in force locally.
