The old watermill Mlin Srnjak is located on the Trepča River in Kirin. Kiringrad has a long archaeological history, from resettlement at the end of the Bronze Age to unusual medieval rock-cut tombs. A rare stand of downy birch and the preservation of traditions at “Đedova kosidba” also give the Municipality of Gvozd a multifaceted character. When choosing a destination, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you would like to focus on historic sites, a nature getaway or an event showcasing regional culture.

Archaeological traces from different periods

The Kiringrad archaeological site is considered one of the more significant sites in Banija. Kiringrad was resettled at the end of the Bronze Age, around 1000 BC or somewhat earlier. It apparently remained an important stronghold until the arrival of the Romans. Kiringrad is also home to unusual medieval tombs carved into the rock. Its history therefore spans from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages.

Stari grad Bović is an archaeological site dating from the 12th to the 15th century. Veliki Petrovac comprises a fortress and a Pauline monastery located at a prehistoric and ancient archaeological site. These places represent different periods and types of cultural heritage: tombs, a medieval site, and a fortress and monastery at an older site. If you would like to visit specific archaeological sites, check the practical visiting arrangements in advance.

Nature, a mill and the regional landscape

The old watermill Mlin Srnjak is located on the Trepča River in the village of Kirin. It is well suited to a nature getaway and to barbecuing with friends or family. This offers a different focus from the archaeological sites: here, the emphasis is on nature and social barbecues, rather than on dating historic finds.

Cret-Đon Močvar is one of only two places in Croatia where downy birch grows. This botanical feature adds a distinct dimension to the historical attractions. It differs considerably from a visit focused on medieval tombs, a fortress or a monastery.

Petrova gora is a regionally significant mountain attraction. It lies partly in the municipalities of Gvozd and Topusko and is considered to be partly developed for visitors. This geographical context is important if you want to associate this destination with the Municipality of Gvozd: Petrova gora is a regional attraction, and its area does not belong solely to this municipality.

Traditions, cuisine and rural character

The Stari Dud estate is located in the village of Golinja. The estate includes a small animal park with domestic animals. Guests are also offered homemade traditional cuisine, prepared in the “Tete Ljubice” kitchen. If you are planning a visit specifically for the animal park or the cuisine, check visiting arrangements and the current offering in advance.

“Đedova kosidba” is a cultural and historical tourist event that preserves and promotes the customs and traditions of Kordun, as well as the way of life of the local population. One of its highlights is a traditional mowing competition. This makes the event a different cultural attraction from the archaeological sites: its focus is on traditions and local ways of life.

Visitors to “Đedova kosidba” are also offered indigenous dishes from Banija and Kordun, as well as good plum brandy. The traditional competition is thus accompanied by regional food and drink. If the event is the reason for your trip, check the dates for the relevant programme in advance.
