Valpovo combines medieval architecture with museum collections and modern ways of presenting history. A preserved defensive tower, a late Gothic chapel and institutions with very different areas of focus give a stay several points of connection to the region’s cultural history.

Castle Complex and Late Gothic Chapel

The preserved medieval defensive tower within the castle complex has two floors and a terrace reached by a spiral staircase. Late Gothic stone details define its architecture. The tower is considered one of the most valuable examples of secular medieval architecture in continental Croatia.

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is also located in the castle. It is Valpovo’s oldest church and was built as a late Gothic chapel in the 15th century. The tower and chapel reveal different aspects of the complex: one highlights medieval defensive architecture, the other a religious building from the same period.

Guided visits to the castle complex are available for groups.

Muzej Valpovštine: History in Eleven Rooms

Muzej Valpovštine brings its exhibition together in eleven rooms. The collections span historical and archaeological topics, hunting and ethnography, as well as zoological and geological, fire service history, craft and art collections. This brings different perspectives on the history and cultural life of the region together, rather than focusing on a single subject.

The museum also has a permanent exhibition and a public library. Visitors particularly interested in collections will therefore find a different focus here than in the architecture of the castle complex: the range of subjects in the exhibition rooms and the library complement the perspective offered by the buildings.

History Through Digital Media and Cultural Events

The Matija Petar Katančić Educational-Interpretive Center presents history through learning spaces, posters, and virtual and augmented reality. Its timeline stretches from the Roman era in Pannonia to 18th-century Valpovština. The center is housed in a restored school building dating from 1859 and is also known as “Katančić’s Time Machine.” Alongside the museum’s collection rooms, it offers a different approach: historical topics are also presented through digital media.

The “Matija Petar Katančić” Valpovo Cultural Center has a multipurpose hall for cinema, theater performances, concerts, promotional events and seminars. This provides a distinct focus on events alongside exhibitions and history interpretation. Which performance or event suits your trip depends on your interests; it is worth checking the specific dates when planning.

Art, Stud Farm and Events

Valpovo’s Stations of the Cross is considered a unique monument in Slavonia. The ceramic reliefs along the Stations of the Cross were made by the Hungarian company Zsolnay. The city’s horse-breeding history is also part of its heritage: Valpovo Stud Farm was founded in 1810 by Baron Josip Prandau. These two details offer different points of interest—the artistic design of the Stations of the Cross and the stud farm’s early history.

A traditional summer event in the Valpovo region brings together cultural associations, local producers and other organizations. Traditional costumes, dances, customs and products are presented. Another event was the May 2026 edition of the Cheese & Wine Festival, where visitors could sample wines and specialties from producers in Slavonia, Baranja, Srijem and other parts of Croatia. This edition has already taken place; if you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates in advance.
