Semeljci Municipality combines a strong connection to the landscape with religious heritage, archaeology and festival traditions. Semeljci lies on the northern edge of the Đakovo Plain. The Brána and Semèljčica streams flow through the settlement; the Semèljčica flows into the Brána. This brings together different travel interests: water and fishing spots, sacred history, early settlement and events throughout the year.

Streams and prepared lakes

Every settlement in Semeljci Municipality has a prepared lake that can be reached by vehicle. Anglers have made the lakes centres for sport, recreation and excursions. The waters thus have distinct roles: the Brána and Semèljčica provide geographical orientation within the area, while the lakes are specifically associated with fishing and recreation. If you would like to explore the landscape and local history together, these offer two different starting points.

Church, pilgrimage and early settlement

The present-day Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built between 1784 and 1788 between Semeljci and Kešinci. For centuries, it has housed an image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, known as Semeljačka Gospa. Historically, the church was also a pilgrimage site: three-day novenas were held before the feast on 8 September.

The discovery of a prehistoric settlement in Semeljci reveals another layer of history. It included semi-subterranean pit houses from the Neolithic and Late Bronze Age; the settlement is attributed to either the Starčevo or Sopot culture. The church and archaeological find point to very different periods, making both religious and prehistoric history part of the travel experience.

Festivals and events throughout the year

In Koritna, the cultural association Vesela Šokadija holds the festival “Poklade su, milo janje moje” every year during carnival season. Also in Koritna, Easter Monday brings the Easter horse ride, attended by around 50 riders from the municipality and neighbouring settlements. In June, the traditional Kolo na Vrbaku folklore festival brings together cultural associations from Croatia and abroad.

Antunovo also takes place in June: in Kešinci, the procession leads from the village centre to the Chapel of Saint Anthony. Another June event is the clay pigeon shooting competition organised by the Zec hunting association from Semeljci or its group in Koritna. Teams and individual participants are judged. On the eve of St John’s Day, the Lipa cultural association keeps the Ivanje–Lilanje tradition alive with a re-enactment of fire-jumping and lilanje.

In October, the Tamburica Orchestra of Semeljci Municipality holds its annual concert. Also in October, Vesela Šokadija organises a children’s folklore festival intended to preserve folklore traditions and children’s games. Culinary customs add to the picture: at the Pužijada in Vrbica, various snail specialities are prepared. At the Rakijada in Semeljci, fruit brandies are judged and the winners among the highest-rated spirits are announced. The events range from processions and folklore to competitions and regional specialities.

Culture in the Semeljci area

Cultural heritage is kept alive beyond individual event dates, too. The singing group Semeljačke snaše preserves traditional singing, folk customs, crafts and costumes in the Semeljci area. If you are looking for accommodation for a visit to Semeljci Municipality, you can first consider whether a festival date will determine your plans or whether you would rather focus on the church, archaeology and waterways.
