A cycling and walking path connects Josipovac with Osijek, alongside the Stara Drava landscape, local religious history and culinary traditions. These offer different ways to explore the area: a specific route, connections with nature, and cultural themes that are sometimes tied to event dates.
Cycling route and landscape
The cycling and walking path between Josipovac and Osijek is 4.8 kilometres long. This provides a specific route for anyone who wants to explore Josipovac by bicycle or on foot. Another natural feature is Stara Drava Josipovac: the lake is an oxbow lake formed from a former main course of the Drava.
The Mura–Drava Regional Park also shapes the area’s natural landscape. The park includes the Josipovac embankment; east and south of Stara Drava near Osijek, its boundary follows the embankment. A survey at Stara Drava Josipovac recorded a total of 26 bird species in 2022. The lake’s form, the protected-area boundary and the species count are complementary aspects of the area’s natural environment. In November 2024, the “Škola u prirodi” activity was also held in Josipovac as part of the “Stara Drava 5” project.
Church and religious heritage
The Church of Saint Joseph in Josipovac was built between 1884 and 1886. It contains three wooden altars in the Tyrolean style, made and installed by the Graz sculptor Stefan Heidenbauer. The construction dates and furnishings offer different insights: the dates place the church building in its historical context, while the materials, style and sculptor’s name provide more detail about the altars.
The restored cross in Josipovac stands on the site of a former church. Thus, the area’s religious history includes both a church building with a known construction date and furnishings, and a reference to a former church site.
Cuisine, customs and community life
At the traditional gathering “Kaj su jeli naši stari,” traditional dishes and recipes passed down through generations are presented and preserved. Numerous stalls are traditionally set up in the village centre for the Feast of Saint Joseph. The two occasions have different focuses: the gathering highlights food culture and culinary knowledge, while the feast centres on the stalls in the village centre.
Community groups also keep local customs alive. KUD Josipovac’s children’s programme combines dance and games with the aim of fostering interest in traditional heritage. It teaches rhythm and simple dance steps. This shows that traditions are passed on not only through culinary gatherings and feast-day customs, but also through a community programme for children.
Dates and travel planning
The topics have different time considerations for travel planning: the cycling and walking path and the area’s religious history are place-based highlights, while the culinary gathering and the Feast of Saint Joseph are events. If you plan to travel specifically for one of these occasions, check the exact dates in advance.
