At the confluence of the Drava and Danube, Aljmaš has a distinctive river theme. The town combines a hiking route of around five hours with pilgrimage history, a memorial center in a former military bunker, and regional cuisine. This lets you plan your trip around specific interests: a riverside trail, cultural history and an excursion destination in an oak forest are all on offer.

Hiking between Aljmaš and Erdut

The Podunavski pješački put starts at Mišino brdo before Aljmaš, passes through the town, follows the Danube and ends in Erdut. Allow around five hours for the entire route. It is not particularly demanding technically or physically and is intended not only for hikers, but also for nature lovers and tourists. One walking route includes a climb to the viewpoint on Kalvarija.

Memorial site and pilgrimage history

Below Aljmaš Kalvarija is the Memorial Center, housed in a former military bunker; it opened in 2023. Visitors can explore sacred, local and artistic works, historical documents, thematic presentations and two chapels independently. The permanent exhibition includes paintings and sculptures created by academic painters and sculptors during the Croatian War of Independence.

The shrine of Gospe od Utočišta became better known in 1704. Pilgrimages can be arranged on any day of the year; groups should register in advance. The church in Aljmaš is also a cultural monument: its restored statue of the Virgin Mary returned to Aljmaš in 1998, and restoration of the church was completed in 2007.

Excursion destination, cuisine and river

Gospa pod Lipom is an excursion destination reached through a centuries-old oak forest. Its name comes from the linden trees planted around a chapel near a water spring. The local tourist offering includes traditional food and drinks from the Danube region, including catfish perkelt with cheese noodles, homemade rakija and liqueurs, as well as cakes and pastries. VINCENT is a wine excursion destination in Aljmaš with a capacity for 50 visitors.

The old Drava riverbed also shapes the opportunities on the water: it flows into the Danube at Aljmaš and is considered an excellent sport-fishing area. Together with its riverside setting and hiking route, this makes for a stay that combines cultural and natural attractions without every activity having the same focus.

Cultural sites in the wider destination of Općina Erdut

The wider destination of Općina Erdut has further cultural sites, including several in Dalj. The “Teutoburgium” Wine Museum was established in the center of Dalj as a project of the Municipality of Erdut in cooperation with Osijek-Baranja County. The restored birthplace of Milutin Milanković houses a permanent exhibition about his life and work and is the seat of the “Milutin Milanković” Cultural and Scientific Center.

The Hram sv. Dimitrija in Dalj dates from 1799 and was built on the foundations of an older church from 1715; it is considered Croatia’s largest Orthodox cathedral church. The archaeological park in Dalj documents the “Dalj Idol,” a richly decorated female figurine from the Middle Bronze Age. Erdut Castle Adamović Čeh was built in the late 18th or early 19th century and substantially expanded in the 19th century. The Erdutskih vinograda winery in Erdut houses a wine barrel made of Slavonian oak with a capacity of 75,000 liters.
