Churches and Intangible Heritage

In the center of Štrigova stands the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene. Another ecclesiastical landmark is the Church of St. Jerome in Štrigova: the famous fresco painter Ivan Ranger decorated part of its sanctuary in the 18th century. Both the central location of the parish church and a historically decorated sanctuary are therefore part of the town’s cultural profile.

Cultural heritage also has a linguistic dimension: the authentic Štrigova dialect is listed as Croatia’s intangible cultural heritage. This offers different cultural interests to explore, from churches and sacred art to linguistic heritage.

Garden Sites, Landscapes and Trails

The estate of the Lovrec winemaking family in Sveti Urban is home to two protected plane trees that are more than 300 years old. The Zmajev vrt in Železna Gora offers a different experience: a botanical and artistic garden. The two sites have distinct characters: here, ancient trees shape the setting; there, garden art meets botany.

The landscape around Štrigova is crisscrossed by marked hiking trails and forest paths. The Međimurje Wine Road also includes cycling routes, walking paths, viewpoints and restaurants serving traditional specialties. You can choose different priorities for your stay rather than treating all these activities as a single offering.

The Pušipelova staza is a route with its own theme: it is 53.9 km long, forms a loop and passes through parts of the Međimurje Wine Road. Along the route are wine cellars, dining establishments, local craft businesses and excursion destinations. Its length and circular route make it a distinct option for planning; the landscape also offers the marked hiking trails and forest paths mentioned above.

At the Mađerkin breg viewpoint, wind harps create melodies powered by the wind. In the wider Međimurje County, the viewpoint is located in Robadje. It is about 27 meters high; from its highest platform, you can look out from Međimurje’s highest point, at 361 meters above sea level.

Pušipel, the Wine Road and Cuisine

Pušipel is the signature wine of the Štrigova area and a quality label from Međimurje. It is offered as Pušipel Classic and Pušipel Prestige. The Međimurje Wine Road includes not only wine cellars, but also restaurants serving traditional specialties, viewpoints and trails. Individual visits to wine cellars and wine rooms require advance booking by phone. Since visiting arrangements may change, it is best to confirm your plans before your trip.

Terbotz Restaurant showcases traditional Međimurje cuisine. Its dishes feature ingredients from its own garden, orchard and estate, as well as from the surrounding forests. The offering may change; check the latest details before visiting.

Urbanovo in May

Held annually in mid-May in Štrigova, Urbanovo is an international festival celebrating Pušipel and the Međimurje wine scene. The program includes wine tastings, presentations, expert workshops, open cellar days, culinary evenings and concerts. If you plan to time your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates, which may vary from year to year.
