At the eastern end of the Međimurje Wine Road, Bukovec is one of several small settlements in a hilly landscape. Groves, gardens, orchards and vineyards shape the area. One local link to the past is the history of education: a school opened in Bukovec in 1941, initially in the family home of Ivan and Juraj Dvanajšćak.

Culture and excursions in Općina Selnica

In Selnica, the Šardi Oldtimer Museum has a permanent exhibition featuring more than 100 exhibits: historic cars, tractors, motorcycles and other means of transport. It is Croatia’s first museum of historic vehicles with a permanent exhibition. Visits must be arranged in advance, so contact the museum ahead of time if you plan to visit.

Various traditions are also part of Selnica’s cultural offerings. The FICKO Festival features educational activities, workshops and international judging of Međimurje fruit brandies. At Dan Pikača, held on the third Saturday in July, visitors can weave a rope from straw; check the exact event date for your trip. The Selnički Pikač is the only traditional mask from Međimurje listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods.

For time outdoors, the public Ribnjak kod Selnice excursion area is in Općina Selnica and can be reached by car. Activities there include enjoying nature, recreation, picnics and socialising. The Ribnjak Selnica fishing area is characterised by clean water, willows, alders, poplars, maples, reeds and green meadows. Alongside cultural attractions, the wider destination also offers opportunities for relaxation and enjoying nature.

Regional products and history

Fruit brandy is part of Međimurje’s regional identity. It is closely connected with the region’s orchards and family farms, as well as knowledge passed down through generations. Family farms in Međimurje also produce honey, pumpkin seed oil, and aromatic white and red wines.

The history of Općina Selnica also includes oil production, which continued until 1952; the Selničko oil field is considered one of the oldest oil fields in the world. St Mark’s Parish Church in Selnica is mentioned in a parish register of the Diocese of Zagreb, drawn up on 9 August 1334. These details add further historical themes from the wider destination to Bukovec’s history of education.
