When planning a visit to Plitvička Jezera, different time frames and seasons matter: a climb to a viewpoint can take around 20 minutes, while a visitor programme lasts two to three hours. Seasonal winter sports are another possible focus.

Lakes, waterfalls and special natural sites

Plitvice Lakes National Park comprises 16 lakes connected by waterfalls. It was Croatia’s first national park when established in 1949; since 1979, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the ongoing process of tufa barrier formation, which creates the lakes.

Čorkova Uvala is an 84-hectare primeval forest in a beech-fir forest at an altitude of 860 to 1,028 metres. Špilja Šupljara also offers a direct insight into the landscape: it is a geomorphological natural monument and the only cave in the park open to visitors. Three chambers are connected by a spacious corridor; the cave is 68 metres long.

Hiking and choosing trails carefully

Hiking trails on the Medveđak ridge pass through old beech forest. Educational signs accompany the trails, which offer panoramic views of parts of the Plitvice Lakes and the surrounding mountains and valleys. If you are looking for a specific time estimate for a climb: Tomićevo pogledalo is at an altitude of 684.82 metres and offers panoramic views over five lakes. The viewpoint opened to visitors in 2024; the climb on foot takes around 20 minutes.

Visitor Programme A covers 3,500 metres and takes two to three hours. Route details may change due to operational changes, so it is advisable to check the latest information. Another route, the Poučno–rekreativna staza Plitvica, runs from Labudovac along the Plitvica stream to Veliki slap and the P3 boat dock at Kozjačka draga. Access depends on the park’s operating conditions. The different estimates for duration and route help you plan the time needed for your chosen activity.

Winter sports in Mukinje

There is a ski area in the settlement of Mukinje, about 2.5 kilometres from Park Entrance 2. A drag lift has a capacity of 400 skiers per hour. The slopes are approximately 400 metres long; tobogganing is also available. Whether seasonal winter activities are possible depends on natural conditions. Operations and facilities may change, so check the latest conditions before your visit.

Historical traces of tourism

The history of tourism at the Plitvice Lakes is associated with 1861: the visitor house Carska near Velika Poljana above Kozjak is linked to this beginning. The historic building was later destroyed. This historical reference adds a specific point of context to the natural experiences, without presenting the house as a visitor facility today.

The park is open year-round; public opening hours vary by season. Check seasonal hours before your visit.

The Plitvice train serves visitors travelling within the national park. Its 6.5-kilometre route runs from Rapajinka via Velika Poljana to Labudovac. The park also has eight electric boats; the longer boat trip across Lake Kozjak takes 20 minutes. Fleet details may change. Wooden rowboats can be rented at Kupalište (P1), and rowing is permitted only on Lake Kozjak. Check current availability before your trip.
