Otočac combines a history of fortifications and sacred architecture with the river landscape of the Gacka. Notable points of interest include Fortica, with its unusual tower plan; the stone bridge along the multi-kilometre riverside path; and the historical exhibits at the Gacka Museum. During your stay, you can combine visits to the town with a walk by the river or a bike ride; the different distance figures help distinguish between these options.

The Gacka and the townscape

The Gacka is a slow-flowing karst river with a rich variety of aquatic plants and wildlife. Near Otočac, it flows into the Karlov Canal before joining the Lika. The river can therefore be viewed as a landscape in its own right, while its onward course to the Lika offers a broader geographical perspective.

The Gacka riverside path stretches for several kilometres and offers views of the stone bridge connecting the lower and upper parts of the town. The path thus brings together the river landscape and a distinctive structure in the townscape. As visitor facilities may change, it is advisable to check the current condition of the path before your visit.

Fortica, church architecture and remembrance

Fortica was built in 1619 to protect Otočac and is one of only two surviving regular triangular towers in Croatia. Fifteen stone Stations of the Cross run from the foot of the fortress to a chapel near the summit. The fortress and the Stations of the Cross offer two distinct historical and religious points of reference.

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Otočac is a single-nave building in the late Baroque and Classical styles, with a rectangular floor plan. It is protected as a cultural asset by the Republic of Croatia. Visitors interested in architecture will find a different form of cultural heritage here than at the fortress: the focus is on the building’s form and its protected status.

The Gačani Croatian Remembrance Park presents a chronological sequence that begins with Duke Borna and ends with the town of Otočac. It complements the buildings with a historical narrative that has clearly defined starting and ending points. When choosing what to visit, you can therefore choose between military history, sacred architecture and a chronological account.

About the Gacka Museum

The Gacka Museum’s permanent exhibition is divided into six sections and includes objects from six museum collections. Its archaeological section comprises around 300 artefacts dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. This permanent exhibition is temporarily unavailable to visitors during a multi-year renovation. Temporary exhibitions and other museum activities remain available in the building. Keep this distinction in mind when planning a museum visit.

Cycling route and regional access

The Jurjeve stijene cycling route starts at Kralja Zvonimira 34 in Otočac and is 42.4 kilometres long. Its stated distance is therefore on a different scale from the several-kilometre riverside path. Signage and route conditions may change, so check them before setting out. Participants in the Gromkova Trail gather in Otočac town park. If you plan to take part in the trail during your trip, check the event dates before travelling.

Roads approach the Gacka/Otočac region from several directions: from Senj and the Primorje region via Vratnik; from Ogulin and Gorski Kotar via the Velika–Mala Kapela passes; from the direction of Plitvice and Krbava via Homoljački klanac; and from Gospić and Lika via Janjča. These regional routes provide a framework for your journey; visits to the town and the activities described in Otočac are separate parts of your trip.
