Gospić can be explored from two distinct perspectives: the historic town with its museums and monuments, and the landscape at the foot of Velebit. The town lies on the western edge of the Lika polje and along the banks of the Lika, Novčica and Bogdanica rivers. This makes the town’s history and its natural surroundings separate themes to consider when planning your trip.
Town History and Museums
The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1783. It is a rare example of sacred architecture for a Military Frontier settlement in Lika. The building that houses the Lika-Gospić Museum reflects a different historical function: this cultural monument dating from the late 18th century served as an office and residence for the colonel general of the Lika Regiment during the Military Frontier.
The museum’s permanent archaeological exhibition, Terra Viva, spans the period from prehistory to the end of the Middle Ages. A permanent ethnographic exhibition is housed in a traditional Lika log cabin in the museum courtyard. The two exhibitions thus have different focuses: the region’s long history and its ethnographic collection.
You will also encounter distinctive places of remembrance in the townscape. Nikola Tesla Square is home to a bronze monument to Nikola Tesla, the first identical monument of its kind in Croatia. The sculpture Water Maiden Marta dates from the 19th century, stands in the centre of Gospić and is considered a symbol of the town. The Murković Mill is an old watermill on the Novčica.
Another topic in the area’s cultural history can be found in nearby Smiljan: the Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre opened on 10 July 2006. This followed the reconstruction of Tesla’s birthplace, which was brought together with a new museum exhibition, surrounding monuments and new buildings.
Landscape, Trails and Activities
Jasikovac is a mixed forest ecosystem characterised by a bird community. It was established as a cultural forest more than 270 years ago. The upper spring areas of the waterways managed in the Gospić area are also notable: the endemic Lika pijor, also known as the Lika pijur, lives there. The history of sport fishing in the area dates back to the founding of the Lika Sport Fishing Club in 1927.
Terezijana is an educational trail along an old Austro-Hungarian road built in 1786 to connect Gospić with Karlobag. The three-kilometre route leads from Baške Oštarije to a viewpoint above Konjsko. Trail conditions can vary; check the condition before setting out if you plan to walk the route.
There are named cycling routes in the area around Gospić: Velikana I and II, Jezero, Štirovača, Brušane, Rizvanuša, Velebit, Jadovno, Plitvice and Ljubovo. The listed cycling options include e-bikes, road bikes and mountain bikes.
Likos Adrenaline Park is about 500 metres from the centre of Gospić. The current programme includes ziplining, paintball, an artificial climbing wall, Gel Blaster, human foosball, archery and kayaking. Activities may change; check which ones are currently available before your visit.
