A public play and recreation area, a 19th-century shrine, and the history of the Pačetanci brass ensemble give Donja Pačetina a distinct local character. The themes range from outdoor recreation and small religious monuments to music history. The wider destination of Općina Sveti Križ Začretje adds further cultural and landscape themes.

Recreation and Local History in Donja Pačetina

The public playground and recreation area includes 532 m² of land for sports and recreation, as well as a 5 m² shelter. Alongside the historical themes, it provides a public place for physical activity and leisure in the village.

The religious heritage of Donja Pačetina includes a 19th-century shrine in Halamani, as well as several other shrines and crosses. In 1950, a local tamburica group became the Pačetanci brass ensemble in Donja Pačetina. This gives culture enthusiasts two distinct points of interest: small religious monuments and the beginnings of a local musical ensemble.

Churches, Museums, and Collections

The parish church in Sveti Križ Začretje dates from the 12th century. It houses the sculpture “Oplakivanje Krista” (“Lamentation of Christ”), which dates from the late 15th century or the first half of the 16th century. The Žitnica building, constructed in 1796, houses the Žitnica Museum. There, the “Zvirek” group presents the ethnographic exhibitions “From Hemp to Folk Costume,” “My Grandmother’s House,” and “Christmas.” Confirm visiting arrangements in advance.

The Museum of Traditional Culture and Heritage is located in Sveti Križ Začretje Castle. The castle was built at the end of the Baroque period, in several construction phases. The Ivan Lovrenčić Gallery in the Žitnica Museum contains 16 paintings, 30 drawings, and 53 prints donated by Ivan Lovrenčić to his hometown. The Rudi Stipković Gallery displays 325 original works by caricaturist Rudi Stipković; visits are possible by prior appointment. Make arrangements before your trip.

The pear tree avenue in Švaljkovec is also among the cultural highlights of the wider destination: it is a monument of garden architecture. These different places and collections offer several specific points of interest if you are interested in architectural history, ethnographic exhibitions, visual art, or landscape design.

Cycling Route and Viewpoint

Cycling route 226, “Okolicom Začretja,” starts and ends in the centre of Sveti Križ Začretje, in front of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. After crossing the Krapinica stream, the route reaches the “Za-Za-Kr” cycle path. Saint Vitus viewpoint offers views across most of Zagorje to the surrounding mountains. An asphalt road branches off the old Sveti Križ Začretje–Mirkovec–Zabok road in Ciglenica Zagorska and leads to the viewpoint.
