The park of Oroslavje Donje Castle is protected as a monument of park architecture and covers 5.43 hectares. Its park history and the castle’s late Baroque architecture offer a cultural and historical perspective on Oroslavje. The town also offers sacred art, historic gardens and a variety of other activities to consider when planning your trip.
Castle Park and Historic Gardens
The park of Dvorac Oroslavje Donje has the character of a landscape park, with Baroque and Neoclassical garden elements. Its landscape-romantic garden architecture is associated with the redesign of 1885. The site’s history thus brings together different design approaches: the Baroque-Neoclassical character of the garden and its later landscape-romantic influence.
The Vranyczany Park tells a different story. Its garden was designed in the style of Versailles and included a lake and an island. Baroque statues of Flora and a satyr, depicting mythological beings, have been preserved in the park. Franz Liszt is also part of the history of the Vranyczany estate: he stayed there twice in 1846 and gave a concert for the local nobility. The garden design, statues and Liszt’s visits each offer a distinct perspective on the estate’s cultural history.
Castle Architecture and Sacred Art
Dvorac Oroslavje Donje was built in a late Baroque U-shape by Sigismund Vojković/Vojkffy at the end of the 18th century. Notable details include the vaulted ceilings with rare late Baroque paintings from the late 18th century. Their motifs come from Greek and Roman mythology. Croatia’s only surviving late Baroque-Neoclassical stove is also preserved in the main hall. The floor plan, paintings and stove reveal different aspects of the castle’s history: its architectural form as well as its artistic decoration.
The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary was probably built in 1652 or 1653, was first mentioned in 1669 and has been a parish church since 1941. Its early 18th-century altar includes a tabernacle and an image of the Virgin Mary with a silver crown. Near Oroslavje, in Krušljevo Selo, stands the Chapel of St. Peter, built in 1808; it is described as an important cultural monument in the area around Oroslavje. The church and chapel add religious architectural and artistic history to the story of the castle and parks.
Mirror Maze, Workshops and Paintball
The Labirint ogledala at Park znanosti creates an experience of multiple reflections with six regularly arranged mirror walls. The educational workshops focus on active research, creative expression, play and fun. Sixty-minute guided tours are available for groups; group visits must be announced in advance. Check the latest information on registration and the program before making plans.
Paintball DUM-DUM organizes recreational paintball for individuals and organized groups in Oroslavje. The playing field in Mokrice, Oroslavje, covers more than 6,000 square meters and has more than 300 shelters. Paintball therefore offers a different focus from castle and church history or activities involving reflections and workshops. Which activity takes priority in your trip planning depends on whether you are more interested in cultural history, an educational activity or a recreational game. As activity arrangements may change, check the latest information about Paintball DUM-DUM before making plans.
