In Novi Golubovec, a protected historic town centre, chapels and a long-standing cultural association give a stay a distinctive character. The themes range from mining history and folklore to sacred art. When planning your trip, you can decide whether local history, religious heritage or the landscape of the wider destination should be the main focus.

Local history and chapels in Novi Golubovec

The historic centre of Novi Golubovec is protected in the spatial plan as an immovable cultural asset of local importance. If you are interested in its current protection status, it is advisable to confirm this locally. Novi Golubovec railway station is also designated as a historic building of local importance.

The Chapel of St Barbara has a connection to mining history: it was built in 1972 in honour of the patron saint of miners. The Chapel of the Sorrowful Jesus is known by its local name, “Otac Bog”. Inside is an old statue of the Sorrowful Jesus carved from stone. The chapel stands on the highest hill in the parish. In 1847, a procession from Veternički dvorac reached the chapel for its blessing—an event in its history with a recorded date.

Folklore and musical tradition

The “Golubovec” Cultural and Arts Association of Novi Golubovec has been active since the 1950s, with shorter periods of inactivity. Its folklore and tamburica sections preserve songs and dances from Hrvatsko Zagorje, Slavonia and Baranja, Međimurje, Posavina and Prigorje, as well as the traditions of the Bunjevac Croats.

The association’s activities also include a traditional collection of folk costumes, which are displayed at performances. The association takes part in cultural events and folklore festivals in Krapina-Zagorje County, throughout Croatia and abroad. The breadth of its repertoire offers a glimpse of different regional music and dance traditions; folklore here is not limited to a single style.

Veternica: church art and spiritual retreat

Within the wider destination of Općina Novi Golubovec, Veternica is another point of interest for cultural history. The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary there was built in the Baroque style in 1744; its late Baroque altar of Our Lady of Sorrows dates from 1755. The Veternica complex once took the form of a small fortified site with a high wall and tower.

The Veternica Spiritual Centre offers a chapel, a Calvary for the Stations of the Cross and space for quiet reflection. Its spiritual retreats include weekends of fasting, prayer and silence. Communities can reserve the centre; they should confirm availability directly. If a community or group cannot arrive with its own clergy member, spiritual guidance can be arranged through the centre’s director.
