Križevci brings together traces of its former urban layout, museums, an industrial monument and a recurring culture and history festival. The city’s history comes to life in public spaces as well as in collections. Five recommended walks also explore themes such as history, orchards and vineyards.
Historic Traces in the Cityscape
Križevci preserves traces of its historic Upper and Lower Town. Remains of the former city wall can be seen at the end of Zakmardijeva Street and near the Church of the Holy Cross. More than ten historic public fountains have been preserved in the city centre and the surrounding central area. Together with the wall remains, they reveal different aspects of the city’s history.
The two-kilometre urban walk “Two Towns in One” takes in Gradska munjara, a protected monument of industrial architecture. It offers a different focus from the fountains and wall remains, highlighting industrial architecture.
Museums and Cultural Venues
The Gradski muzej is housed in one of Križevci’s oldest surviving townhouses. Its permanent exhibitions cover the city’s cultural and historical development, as well as archaeology, documents, ethnography and art. The themes of individual exhibitions may evolve over time. The Križevačka likovna galerija hosts changing exhibitions; the programme varies.
The history of buildings and traditions is also part of the city’s cultural heritage. Reconstruction of the former Križevci synagogue began in 2014; today, the building serves as a tourist information centre. The history of the Križevačka djevojačka straža dates back to July 1848. The Križevački štatuti are written rules of table etiquette that have been mentioned since the 18th century.
Walks and Activities
The five recommended city walks explore a range of themes: the history of Križevci, orchards, vineyards and routes towards Kalnik. Together with the two-kilometre “Two Towns in One” walk, they offer different points of reference for planning a route. Route conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Geocaching is another activity to consider in the city and surrounding area, where there are hundreds of geocaches; individual caches may change. Equestrian clubs in Križevci offer riding schools. Križevačko veliko spravišče is a recurring three-day culture and history festival held in mid-June since 1968. The exact dates vary. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates before planning your stay.
Vinska cesta križevačkoga Prigorja runs through the wider area of the Municipality of Grad Križevci. The wine road offers wine and gastronomy alongside cultural and natural attractions; individual providers and access conditions may change. Around Križevci, Prigorske mliječne staze connects family farms offering farm visits, activities for children and dairy-product tastings. Participating farms and offers may change.
