Gentle slopes covered with vineyards and forests, historic archaeological sites, and a cycling route focused on regional history give Općina Kloštar Podravski a varied character. The municipality lies on Bilogora and along the Podravska magistrala. Its history reaches back to a medieval settlement and fortification; traces of the former Franciscan monastery also shape the history of the area.

The Natura 2000 site “Bilogora i Kalničko gorje”, site code HR1000008, also includes the municipality of Kloštar Podravski and is important for bird conservation. For an exploration by bicycle, the 62.4-kilometre historical cycling route “Istraži povijest područja Dravski Peski” offers a regional-history focus. They cover, among other things, archaeological sites, old fortifications, the history of settlements, and earlier ways of dealing with floods and river crossings. Layers of local history

In the Middle Ages, Kloštar Podravski was an important settlement and fortification in the region. The place was formerly called Gorbonog; it appears under this name in parish records from 1334 and 1501. A Franciscan monastery existed from 1292 to 1552 and gave the settlement its name. These dates place the monastery’s history in context and are distinct from the later written mentions of the former place name.

Archaeological sites also point to this past. “Kaštel Gorbonuk” is a 15th-century site, about 500 metres north of the Church of Saint Benedict and Our Lady of Sorrows. The site known as “Lokalitet franjevački samostan i srednjevjekovna župa”, the location of the Franciscan monastery and medieval parish, is also in the centre of Kloštar Podravski.

One historical reference concerns the Church of Saint Adrian. It stood in the area that is now called Oderjan. A parish with the parish church of Saint Nicholas is recorded in Prugovac as early as 1334. The history of the area is thus spread across several named places and tells more than just the story of the settlement of Kloštar Podravski itself.

The municipality’s listed cultural heritage includes the Church of Saint Benedict in Kloštar Podravski, the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes in Budančevica, and the Church of Saint Francis Xavier in Kozarevac. There is a stamp station on the Camino Podravina at the Church of Saint Benedict and Our Lady of Sorrows. For motorsport enthusiasts, the Karasov brijeg track in Kozarevac is also part of the region’s history: in 2011, Kozarevac hosted the European Motocross Championship there.

The 31st wine exhibition in Kloštar Podravski received 328 wine samples.
