The Municipality of Hlebine lies on the right bank of the Drava; Hlebine is particularly associated with naive art. The Galerija naivne umjetnosti Hlebine, the Church of St. Catherine and other artistic and cultural attractions give your stay a clear focus. There are also activities at the Stari Zanati estate, which require advance booking.

Naive Art in Hlebine

The Galerija naivne umjetnosti Hlebine was founded in 1968 as a branch of the Muzej grada Koprivnice. A museum and gallery building was constructed specifically for it. The gallery’s sculpture park was established in 1974; in 1985, the gallery received the Ivan Generalić museum collection. Today, it has a permanent museum exhibition featuring paintings donated by Ivan Generalić. The gallery is in the centre of the village, opposite the municipal office and a shop.

The naive art collection comprises just over 500 museum objects: paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints. The glass paintings by the first and second generations of the Hlebine School include works by Ivan Generalić, Franjo Mraz, Mirko Virius, Franjo Filipović, Dragan Gaži, Josip Generalić, Francina Dolenec, Mijo Kovačić and Ivan Večenaj. Another work associated with Hlebine is Ivan Generalić’s painting “Rogati konj”, considered one of his outstanding works from the 1960s. The collection was granted the status of a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia in 2016.

Understanding the Hlebine School

The Hlebine School began in the early 1930s: Krsto Hegedušić set its development in motion after becoming acquainted with the works of Ivan Generalić and Franjo Mraz. Naive painting from Podravina is characterised by scenes of rural everyday life, tranquil landscapes, vivid local colours and, above all, painting on glass. These features help place the works on display within a regional artistic tradition, rather than viewing them merely as individual paintings.

The Hlebine School of Painting and Sculpture encompasses more than two hundred artists from different generations. As a cultural and tourism programme in Hlebine, Hlebine School includes artistic gatherings, workshops, art colonies, a naive art fair and naive art courses. It thus connects the history of the art school with various forms of artistic exchange and learning; these details do not specify dates.

The Church and Other Places of Artistic Interest

The Church of St. Catherine was built in 1834 on the site of an older wooden church. It stands in the village centre at the crossroads of the roads to Koprivnica and Molve and has late Baroque and Neoclassical features. Inside is a Stations of the Cross decorated with works by naive artists. The furnishings also include an organ built in 1837 by Varaždin organ builder Ignatz Petter. The building’s history, architecture and artistic associations can all be explored in one place.

Other cultural landmarks in Hlebine are associated with various artists and places of remembrance. Stara kuća Ivana Generalića is a memorial museum that opened to the public in 1992. The gallery and studio of Josip Generalić were established in 1995, and the ethnographic house Janičina hiža in 1999. A fresco by Ivan Generalić, dating from 1954, can be seen in the primary school atrium. The House of the Hegedušić Brothers is associated with Krsto Hegedušić’s membership of the Zemlja group from 1929 to 1936 and with Željko Hegedušić’s surrealist work.

Crafts, Regional Cuisine and Landscape

The ethnographically designed Stari Zanati estate welcomes groups and individuals of up to 30 people by prior arrangement. Traditional Podravina dishes are prepared for guests using old recipes and ingredients from the estate and surrounding area. Activities described there include making bread or lepinja and learning about traditional crafts: with potter Davor, painter Zlatko and blacksmith Ervin. So don’t plan your visit as a spontaneous drop-in; make arrangements in advance.

Stari Zanati also hosts seasonal events such as Čvarkijada and Rakija Days; check the dates before making specific plans. The artificial lakes in the Municipality of Hlebine offer another connection with the landscape and are used for fishing by anglers from Podravina. The municipality thus brings together cultural attractions, crafts and regional cuisine alongside a landscape-related activity, without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
