Petrova Gora is the main tourist destination and landmark of Vojnić Municipality. Deep ravines cut through the area; numerous waterways and drinking water springs shape its character. Babbling brooks, woodland flowers and wild animals are part of a fairy-tale landscape that attracts visitors in every season. Since 1969, the central part of Petrova Gora has been protected as a significant landscape.

Nature and trails on Petrova Gora

Petrovac Ornithological Park is located on the summit of Petrova Gora. A signposted trail leads there; information panels provide details about the birds that live there. Birds and other animals can be observed from a viewing tower. As facilities may change, check the current status before visiting.

The red and green trails are each listed as taking four hours to walk. Both start and end at Lovački dom Muljava. The “Rimski put” educational trail is described differently, by its measurements: the circular route is 2,600 metres long, runs at an elevation of 230 to 320 metres, and also starts and ends at Lovački dom. It leads through dense beech, sessile oak and chestnut forest.

The green trail leads from the educational trail via Rimski put to the Petrovac plateau. Along the way, it passes historic sites on Veliki and Mali Petrovac and descends to Kraljev grob. Trail conditions and markings may change; check both before your hike.

Historic sites and monuments

In the southern part of Vojnić Municipality, the remains of the medieval town of Klokoč lie on a hill above the village of Klokoč. The remains of the Pauline monastery of St. Peter are located on Mali Petrovac. The monastery was founded in 1303 or 1304 and is considered one of Croatia’s oldest Pauline monasteries.

In the forest of Petrova Gora, in the Pišin gaj area, lies the Central Partisan Hospital Complex. Its construction began in 1942 and was completed in 1943; at that time, it comprised 32 buildings. The 37-metre-high Petrovac Monument stands on Veliki Petrovac. Part of the cylindrical tower remains of the medieval fortress of Otmić Grad.

Getting there and an annual event

The monument on Veliki Petrovac can be reached by car or bus via a paved road. Stari Grad Krstinja can be reached by a footpath from the paved road or by a gravel road. Road and trail conditions may also change; check them before setting out.

Every October, the Gljivarijada takes place in Muljava. It includes an exhibition of edible and inedible mushrooms. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the date for the relevant year.
