Radatovići lies on the slopes of Žumberačka gora in the western part of Žumberak-Samoborsko Gorje Nature Park. The Sveta Gera cycling route passes through the village; its churches, former school and a literary work also tell its story. The mountain landscape, cycling and cultural heritage thus offer different perspectives on a stay here.

Cycling route towards Sveta Gera

The 59-kilometre Sveta Gera cycling route passes through Radatovići and continues via Sekulići to Sveta Gera and Sošice. It includes 1,030 metres of elevation gain and combines paved and gravel surfaces. Three specific features therefore come together when choosing this route: distance, elevation gain and surface. The kilometres indicate the route’s length, the elevation gain adds information about the climb, and the mix of surfaces offers another point of reference for planning. At 1,178 metres, Sveta Gera is the highest peak of Žumberačka gora and northwestern Croatia.

The route’s landscape includes beech forest, a mountain stream and mountain meadows; on the return to Sošice, it passes through several traditional villages. The abandoned village of Gaj lies between Radatovići and Sveta Gera. At 850 metres above sea level, it was once Žumberak’s highest inhabited place. The elevations refer to different things: 1,178 metres identifies Sveta Gera as a peak, while 850 metres reflects Gaj’s former significance as a settlement. From Radatovići, the views extend towards Velika Kapela, Mala Kapela, Klek, part of Bela Krajina and Sveta Gera.

Churches, a fresco and literature

The parish of the Resurrection of Christ was first mentioned in 1623. The parish church of the Resurrection of the Lord was built at its present location in 1870. The former school houses an ethnographic collection and an anti-war fresco dating from 1943 by Zlatko Prica and Nikola Reiser. The school is closed to visitors because research work is ongoing. These dates mark different historical reference points: the parish’s first mention, the construction of the church and the 20th-century fresco.

At the Radatovići cemetery, the All Saints’ Chapel also serves as the tomb of a priest. In nearby Badovinci, the Greek Catholic Church of St Nicholas stands by the road towards Radatovići. Next to the church is a monument to famous Uskok families, displaying their coats of arms. Literature is also part of the area’s history: Jovan Hranilović wrote his Žumberak Elegies in Radatovići. Together, these connections offer different points of interest, from places of worship and family history to literary heritage.
