Vukova Gorica lies on the right bank of the Kupa and on the Zagreb–Karlovac–Rijeka road. The river and the history of the transport routes are two useful reference points for getting your bearings. The historic Lujzijana passes through the village and connects Rijeka with Karlovac; it was designed by Filip Vukasović. Vukova Gorica thus brings together a clear connection to the Kupa and a historic road link between two cities.

The Kupa and Routes Through the Surrounding Area

One route from Vukova Gorica passes through the three villages of Prilišće, continues to Ladešići and includes a swimming stop on the Kupa. Vukova Gorica itself is also designated as a summer swimming spot on the river. These offer different ways to enjoy the river: a swimming stop along a route and a summer swimming spot as a feature of the village. If you would like to plan your days around the Kupa, this information can help you consider the river both as a destination along a route and as part of your bearings in the area.

There is another connection to the Lujzijana for cyclists: a self-guided cycling route description follows the historic road along the Kupa to Vukova Gorica. This tour thus combines the river and road history in one cycling route. It differs from the route through Prilišće and Ladešići, which includes a swimming stop on the Kupa. Check whether the cycling route is available before your trip.

Cultural Heritage in Vukova Gorica

The Chapel of St. Juraj is classified in Croatia as protected cultural heritage under designation Z-3090. It is also designated as a viewpoint and stands on a rise above the Kupa. The chapel dates from 1688. Its protected status, designation as a viewpoint and location by the river each give the building a distinct connection to the history and landscape of the village.

The KPH District Conference Building is also part of the village’s protected cultural heritage. A commemorative plaque at the house where the first KNOO meeting was held is listed as cultural heritage. Vukova Gorica 2 is listed in the cultural heritage register as a traditional farmstead. These different sites draw attention beyond the religious building to a conference building, a place of remembrance and a traditional rural farmstead.

Vukova Gorica is also the birthplace of politician I. Šubašić. In 2023, a bilingual historical information board about him was placed at his ruined estate in Vukova Gorica, next to the historic Lujzijana. Alongside the protected buildings and farmstead, this adds another connection to the history of the village: the memory of a politician and the information board at his estate.

The Wider Destination of Općina Netretić

Within the wider destination of Općina Netretić, the municipality is part of the Karlovac Dinaric Karst. Numerous sinkholes, grassland and woodlands of birch, oak, beech, hornbeam and chestnut characterise this broader landscape. The Dobra also flows through the Netretić area. This regional natural setting complements the focus on the Kupa in Vukova Gorica with another perspective on rivers and landscape at the municipal level.

Cultural heritage in the wider destination of Općina Netretić also includes the ruins of Stari grad Novigrad na Dobri Castle, built by the Frankopans and in their possession until 1671. The Most na Dobri bridge near Novigrad na Dobri is one of Croatia’s oldest river bridges; it is 122 metres long and has ten openings. In Novigrad na Dobri, the Church of the Assumption of Mary developed from a 15th-century Gothic chapel and was given Baroque features in the 17th century. These examples broaden the regional cultural perspective without replacing Vukova Gorica’s distinct local connections.
