Along the Mrežnica, waterfalls, meadow clearings, farmland, steep wooded slopes, mills, and swimming spots are part of the landscape; the Dobra corridor shares meadows, farmland, mills, and waterfalls with it, and also includes wooded slopes and drinking-water springs. The area of the Mrežnica and Tounjčica is protected as a significant landscape and natural monument and is part of the Natura 2000 network.

Experience Rivers and Trails

In the Municipality of Generalski Stol, the Mrežnica is suitable for rafting, canoeing, swimming, and fishing. Those interested in water-based activities will find several ways to experience the river landscape here. Cycling on one of the available bike trails is another activity in the municipality.

Four Nordic walking trails are signposted around Toplice Lešće: Staza ciklama, Staza šišmiša, Panorama Lešća, and Put mlina. Each trail has its own character, reflected in its name. If you plan to follow one of these routes, check the signs on site. Toplice Lešće also offers wellness facilities with indoor and outdoor pools that use spring thermal water, as well as whirlpools and hydromassage columns. If you are planning a specific visit, it is advisable to check current visiting options in advance.

Archaeological Layers and Sacred Sites

Gradišće-Bukovlje is a multi-layered archaeological site. Its earliest traces include a prehistoric hillfort dating from the transition between the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The same site also contains a Late Antique fortress, dated to the 4th century based on finds. The different dates make this a discovery for anyone interested in the long layers of a landscape’s development.

The 13th-century Chapel of St. George stands in Mateško Selo. Another sacred site is the Baroque Church of St. George in Lešće na Dobri, which houses a small sacred art museum. The old forge in Lipov Pesak has been preserved and is still in operation. These places reveal different facets of the municipality’s cultural heritage: from a medieval chapel and a Baroque church to a working craft building.

Finding Your Way Around the Municipality

The historic Jozefina Road runs through the Municipality of Generalski Stol, roughly parallel to the railway and the Mrežnica. The Zagreb–Rijeka railway line also passes through the municipality and contributes to its transport connections. The river, railway, and historic road thus shape how visitors find their way around the municipality.

An old stone table stands in the centre of Generalski Stol, where visitors can still stand today. This small, tangible landmark complements the broader themes of waterscapes, archaeology, and transport history. When planning your stay, you can combine different interests: rivers and activity, prehistoric and Late Antique traces, or sacred sites and crafts.
