For Gornje Mrzlo Polje Mrežničko, two different travel questions arise: Which local cultural landmark would you like to learn more about, and how much should hiking and river activities in the Duga Resa area shape your stay? Pod Rogancem gives the place an archaeological connection. The other information about nature and activities relates partly to the Mrežnica landscape and partly to routes and activities around Duga Resa. So do not automatically consider them one continuous route. When looking for a holiday apartment, this distinction can help you set your priorities.

Pod Rogancem and the Mrežnica landscape

In Duga Resa’s spatial plan, Pod Rogancem is designated as a protected archaeological site in Gornje Mrzlo Polje Mrežničko. It is the specific local cultural landmark. The protected Mrežnica landscape, by contrast, encompasses the lower course of the river within the area of the City of Duga Resa. It covers 1,401.79 hectares. This makes it possible to view Pod Rogancem’s connection to the place and the wider landscape as distinct topics when planning a trip.

The Mrežnica has more than 90 travertine waterfalls; 29 travertine barriers lie within the Significant Landscape. The landscape also includes karst features such as caves, sinkholes and underground formations. These geological features add another dimension to the river area alongside its waterfalls. The river is also an important habitat for the strictly protected stone crayfish and noble crayfish. The Mrežnica area is also home to six fish species endemic to the Danube basin.

Routes to Vinica and around Duga Resa

Different routes to Vinica are described. One approach leads from Mrzlo Polje via Belajske Poljice and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. A section of the Four Karlovac Rivers Trail runs from Mrzlo Polje via Mrežnički Most to Vinica; it is estimated to take 1 hour 30 minutes. The named intermediate locations indicate different routes, so the times are not interchangeable. When planning, use the time that corresponds to the specific route.

The Four Karlovac Rivers Trail can be completed in sections and, in dry weather, can also be cycled. Other options around Duga Resa include walks along the Šetalište Tušmer on Vinica and routes along the Mrežnica. Šetalište Tušmer combines a walk with scenic views; cycling along the river offers a different way to explore. So when comparing hiking and cycling, both the specific route and the weather conditions for the trail are important.

A longer river excursion

There is a tourist canoe route of approximately 8 kilometres on the Mrežnica in the Duga Resa area. The trip takes about 3 to 5 hours, depending on how much time you allow for swimming and rest breaks. Along the way, you pass around ten travertine barriers. Children can take part with a parent. Unlike the approximately one-and-a-half-hour walking sections to Vinica, the canoe trip is a longer block of time that you can plan as a separate activity for the day.
