In the Municipality of Duga Resa, excursions range from activities on the Mrežnica to cycling and hiking trails and cultural sites. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests in the river, landscape and history, without packing every theme into a busy itinerary.

The Mrežnica, Walking Trails and Summer Swimming

The Mrežnica is 64 kilometres long and has 93 travertine barriers. In the Municipality of Duga Resa, swimming, rafting, canoeing and kayaking are among the activities on the river; local conditions may vary. The river provides a focal point for various water activities, while trails on land offer a different way to explore.

In the Mrežnički Brig excursion area, people swim in the Mrežnica beneath waterfalls in summer. Tennis and beach volleyball are also available there. The swimming spot at Mrežnički Brig also offers opportunities for summer swimming in the river; check current facilities before travelling. The seasonal focus is important when planning: swimming is described as a summer activity, not a year-round programme.

For a hike, consider Vinica: the 321-metre-high hill can be climbed from the riverbank. Vinica is also home to Šetalište Tušmer, a tourist trail for walking and enjoying the scenery. If you prefer walking by the water, a stroll along the river offers views of the reflection of Gornji mlin mill in the water. This gives you several distinct options: a hilltop destination, a trail on Vinica and a riverside walk.

Cycling Routes with Different Highlights

Cycling Route 5, Između zelenih rijeka, is a 25-kilometre loop. Its surface is 78 percent asphalt and 22 percent gravel. The length, loop format and surface proportions provide concrete points of reference for planning your ride. Check current signage and route conditions before setting out.

Cycling Route 6, Kroz livade i voćnjake, runs between the Mrežnica and the Dobra through river valleys, wooded hills and broad meadows. Route 5 can be described by its length and surface proportions; for Route 6, the landscape along the way takes centre stage. These are different points of reference when choosing a route, without implying anything about difficulty or the time required.

The Mrežnički Brig excursion area, next to Camp Slapić, is recommended as the starting point for Route 5. Autokamp Slapić in Mrežnički Brig is also a bicycle rental location; check its current availability before your trip. Plan your start according to the recommendation and your own schedule, and check the conditions on site for both routes.

Cultural History in Duga Resa and the Surrounding Area

Archaeological finds on the banks of the Mrežnica reflect prehistoric settlement as well as the presence of Romans, Illyrians and early Croats. The municipality’s churches and chapels also offer tangible insights into its cultural history: the Church of St Anthony of Padua in Duga Resa, the Church of St Peter in Sveti Petar Mrežnički and the Chapel of St Roch in Petrakovo Brdo are classified as immovable cultural heritage.

Another destination is medieval Novigrad na Dobri. Its round defensive tower offers views towards Mount Klek. As restoration work is ongoing, confirm current access before visiting. In Leskovac Barilović, there is also the Baroque parish church of St Joseph, built in 1785. These places add archaeological and architectural heritage to the river landscape; consider them as a separate focus alongside water activities and cycling tours.
